If you are a dedicated electronic music fan, there really is no need to give you too much of an introduction into the world of 16 Bit Lolitas. For those that are uninitiated, welcome to a whole new world. 

The Dutch duo of Ariaan Olieroock and Peter Kriek have been around since the early 00's, releasing the sort of productions which always reserved space in many revered DJ bags. They received worldwide recognition with tracks like ‘Murder Weapon’, ‘Nobody Seems To Care’, ‘Sedna’ and remixes for the likes of Sander Kleinenberg and Armin van Buuren.

Where many early-00's prog producers faded away, 16BL endured its heyday to stay as relevant today as they were a decade ago. Lately, the 16 Bit Lolitas have been focusing some of that energy into their side project, Cubicolor; a project with Tim Digby-Bell which of late has been gaining some serious momentum, even seeing them receive some attention outside of the club scene (they 'are currently working hard on the new Cubicolor album').

For their Balance excursion the Dutch boys have kept to form with a beautifully crafted selection of tracks and remixes from artists like Patrice Baumel, Trikk, Audiofly, Adriatique and more. And needless to say, 16BL have delivered a masterful mix.

Conspicuous from the rest of Bristol's electronica scene in the '90s by the absence of trip-hop or jungle leanings in their productions, Way Out West instead pursued straight-ahead house and trance with closer ties to progressive British dancefloors than American hip-hop. 

The duo of Jody Wisternoff and Nick Warren first came together in the mid-'90s. Wisternoff was a veteran producer who had first recorded at the age of 14 (with fellow Bristolian house artists Smith & Mighty), while Warren was a high-profile Balearic DJ and club-night promoter influenced by the sounds of Madchester. The duo began recording together, and by 1996 their single "The Gift" had become a big mover on dancefloors and the radio as well, thanks to a British advert that used the song. Signed to Deconstruction, Way Out West released their self-titled debut album in 1997. A change of venue, to Distinct'ive, preceded the release of 2001's Intensify, and after a three-year interim the duo followed that with the like-minded Don't Look Now.

With Warren meanwhile releasing numerous mix compilations, many of them for Global Underground, Way Out West returned in 2009 with We Love Machine. Featuring contributors such as Scuba, Jaytech, and D. Ramirez, We Love Machine: The Remixes followed on Hope Recordings a year later. Wisternoff released the solo album Trails We Blaze on Anjunadeep in 2012 and went on to mix several instalments of the label's popular compilation series. Anjunadeep also issued the Way Out West singles "Tuesday Maybe" and "Set My Mind" in 2016. With guest appearances by Doe Paoro and Liu Bei, the duo's fifth LP, Tuesday Maybe, arrived in June 2017 and was accompanied by a performance at the Glastonbury Festival. Since then, the band have embarked on a UK tour, released their Tuesday Maybe (Remixed)album, and prepared a legion of new music to release throughout 2018 - and, with more new projects in the pipeline for the next year, it's safe to say that there's never been a more exciting time to be a Way Out West fan.

Their new chill-out EP 'Sunday Maybe' is out now on digital and limited edition 12” vinyl. Catch Way Out West headlining Concorde 2 in Brighton on 3rd Oct and Rescue Rooms in Nottingham on 4th Oct.

Decided to record a breaks set as I had been collecting a few recently, and didn't want a 90s track to stand out as being obviously old when listening to it. Obviously had to include one of my favourite tracks of all time from Essay - Archangel. Gus F is a musician, producer and DJ based on the beautiful island of Jersey. Gus won the global Sasha / Last Night On Earth DJing competition with a popular breaks mix just before the Covid pandemic sent the world into lockdown. He has been busy with productions, mixes and events since; dreaming up and broadcasting Secret Sunset to showcase new music at iconic locations around the beautiful island of Jersey and producing popular bootleg remixes from the likes of Kate Bush, London Grammar and Billie Eilish. Gus's first signed remix reached #1 on Beatport in the Electronica genre; a deep house version of Darkersound's "Through The Night" on Stripped Recordings. A number of other remixes were signed to Emotional Content and Music To Die For in late 2021. A massive remix of Bronski Beat's iconic Smalltown Boy was finally released in summer 2022 with Jimmy Somerville's blessing, almost 2 years and 1 million streams after a bootleg version was first aired at Secret Sunset.
