It was fitting that Brazilian-born, Austria-based artist Joyce Muniz broke through in an era characterised by the cross-pollination and globalisation of music. Initially combining the sounds and rhythms of her home country with contemporary European electronic sounds, she later morphed into a house / techno producer of the highest calibre. Along the way she worked with the likes of Maya Jane Coles and Viennese legends Kruder & Dorfmeister and released on influential imprints like 2020 Vision and Shir Khan’s Exploited. It’s the latter which has been her main platform for releasing music since 2011 and where she now unleashes her full-length debut album, Made In Vienna.

The album showcases the latest evolution of her sound, moving her from the dancefloor into a space somewhere between the club and the home, aided by a slew of perfectly crafted vocals.“This album took almost two years to make” she reveals. “I met a lot of people during my tours. I also brought a lot of people to Vienna to work with me.” Her symbiotic relationship with the Austrian capital sees her put in as much as she takes out of it. She is part of the fabric of the city’s musical scene, from her show on national radio station FM4 to her residency at the sadly deceased Pratersauna.

With a long gestation period and a cast of collaborators picked up through her journeys across the world, Made In Vienna is a record that embodies Muniz’s recent life and experiences, and makes it all the more personal and charismatic as a result. “It’s hard to say what this album is” she elaborates on the record’s identity. “I can imagine people dancing to it in the club but also in the car, or hearing it on the radio or at home. I think it really depends of the mood of the listeners.” Indeed, with the lines between the clubs and the radio blurrier than ever, her approach to this debut record couldn’t be better suited to 2016.

Kat Vinter’s honeyed vocal on Cover Me Up gets the album going in fine style, countered by male singer Knixx’s soulful delivery on Drop In Pressure as a follow-up. 
Simple Poetry shows she doesn’t rely on vocals to make a captivating track, however, with lush chords pulsing over a succinct arrangement. Wake Beside You shows her prowess in the b-line department with Christa Vi’s higher registers providing the perfect counterbalance to the phat bottom end. Hide with Enequist takes her musicality to new heights with gliding harmonies and xylophones and Human Life collaboration Deeper takes the melodies into a moodier place. Gotta Love It is one of her typically guttural, low-slung club workouts. Daydreaming provides a gently pumping and euphoric groove. After this comes Angelique Bianca’s sultry tones on the techy Wehbba co-production Sleepless, and her Kraftwerk-sampling single Back In The Days with Jungle Brothers legend Bam’s inimitable hip-house stylings showing what a diverse range of sounds and songs Muniz is able to eke out of the house/techno template. Album closer Silent Crime presents the album’s most delicate and fragile moment.

It’s not easy to make a cohesive, convincing album that marries the best of both worlds, but Joyce Muniz has done in seemingly effortless fashion.

The journey continues with the indiesque laid back sound of “Leisure” from Yula Kasp, a good friend of The Boys, originally from Poland, based in the suburbs of Paris where she stays creative thanks to the company of her cats, the love from her lover, her beautiful garden and the fine herbs she gets from it.

Next is Antimateria (Speachless extended version*) from Beyou. A slow
dark and introspective trip from Diego, beloved friend from Mexico City.* 

From Monterrey (Mexico) El Güero Fresa Presenta: brings us “Convertible Ride”, a unique track which is almost a guilty pleasure… Enjoy the breeze in your face and try not to smile while listening to it… just not possible.

The trip ends (for some) with Land From Land by Otto, from Germany… a beautiful one take melancholic recording which makes time stop.

(en) French soundsmith Sebastien Bouchet has a well-documented knack for deep, eccentric techno and house – as well as a reputation for keeping his solo releases few and far between. Seeing him return to Kompakt under new monicker SEBASTOPOL is a pretty special treat, then – his last contribution to the Kompakt label family dates back to the year 2014, when he dropped the much-acclaimed Speicher 77 (KOMPAKT EXTRA 77). Naturally, expectations are high, and his latest offering GAHALOWOOD does not disappoint, seamlessly merging Bouchet’s leftfield sensibilities and unlikely riffs with a strong dance floor drive. 

Opener and title track GAHALOWOOD gets things off the launch pad quickly, thanks to its stoic kickdrum and surging synths – but it’s those vocals that really pull you in, evolving from atmospheric swabs of texture to full-blown mumblecore imbued with all the deadpan romanticism of an early 80s New Wave act. B side follow-up FLASH POOL seems equally committed to the human voice, deploying its intimate groove whispering upfront, but takes an unexpected turn into psychedelic cowbell territory where feral bleeps roam the lands and hooklines grow in the weirdest of places. Closing cut HEAVEN presents a comparatively straightforward house arc - while still sniffing out some trippy goodness that’ll leave your thirst of sonic adventure wholly satisfied.

BIO:
The Icelandic band Gus Gus originally spawned from a shortcut made by Siggi Kjartansson and Stefán Árni (a.k.a. Arni & Kinski) called “Pleasure”. Initially the band was acclaimed as an avant-garde collective of musicians, producers, filmmakers and performers. They mixed together different mediums to create a unique mixture of sound and vision. Their trademark style is combined with funky bass, streamlined synths and the intelligent use of technology and art. Árni & Kinski did the visual part and the musical side was driven by Birgir Þórarinsson (a.k.a. Veiran), Stephan Stephenssen (a.k.a President Bongo), Magnús Guðmundsson (a.k.a. Herb Legowitz). The live band was fronted by singers Daníel Ágúst, Hafdís Huld and Magnús Jónsson (a.k.a. Blake).

Gus Gus is an electronic soul band formed in 1995. A short break in a making of the shortcut made it possible for the first Gus Gus self-titled album to be born. In 1996 the band signed to 4AD Records that released their widely acclaimed second album “Polydistortion”. "This Is Normal" followed in 1999 and finally "Gus Gus vs T-World" appeared in 2000. During the 4AD years, Gus Gus started touring massively, stirring the music world with their powerful live-show. The touring life was stressful for the nine some and eventually called for changes within the line up. Six original members left and the three remaining producers (Veiran, President Bongo and Herb Legowitz) soon found hope in a new female singer, Earth aka Urður Hákonardóttir. The band has ever since focused on being a musical entity. 

In 2002 Gus Gus re-appeared with their 4th studio album "Attention" which includes their most successful dance floor hit “David”. On the album the band teamed up with the legendary producer Gareth Jones and Finnish multi-instrumentalist Jimi Tenor. The album demonstrates a sharply focused club-band full of creativity and even more energetic than ever. Daníel Ágúst
