Stupid Things I Do (New School Mix)

Foremost international techno outlet Drumcode is delighted to announce the release of its next full-length album, ‘Satellite’, by enduring Italian techno talent Sam Paganini.

Though he has been active since the mid nineties, recent years have been hugely successful for Sam, with searing techno EPs coming on revered labels such as Riche Hawtin’s Plus8, Sven Vath’s Cocoon and of course, Adam Beyer’s Drumcode. In his time he has been responsible for underground hits like ‘Zoe’, ‘Polyester’ and ‘Fire In My Arms’, all of which demonstrate his dynamic understanding of sexy, dark and hypnotic techno grooves and at the same time have earned him plenty of great Beatport chart positions as well as respect from the best in the game.

Incredibly, ‘Satellite’ is Sam’s first full-length album. Informed by his DJ gigs at legendary places like Berghain in Berlin and Cielo in New York, the album starts with a dystopian bit of sonic scene setting, as if a space ship is charging up ready to take off.

From there it’s a case of getting straight down to business. ‘Another Chance’ is a spacey bit of cantering techno and ‘White’ is rooted in devastating kick drums and is riddled with serrated synth lines that build lots of great techno pressure. ‘Down’ is an undulating bit of funky techno complete with choice vocal flourishes and tracks like ‘Lotus’ are prime offerings from the deeper end of the scale.

No two tracks sound the same on Satellite: Sam is always teasing out a new bit of texture, nailing a slightly different vibe or exploring different amounts of light and dark throughout the course of this most excellent album. This is evidenced by diverse cuts like ‘Dusty’, ‘Toxic’ and ‘Rave’.

Despite ‘Satellite’ being Sam’s debut album, it showcases his seductive style in all its glory across 12 fantastic tracks that will leave you begging for more.

Berlin lynchpins Jacob Phono and Jens Bond continue a fine run of collaborative EPs on Steve Bug's ever-reliable Audiomatique imprint. Deadly deep, dark and detailed, all 3 tracks are intense, club-ready excursions along the border between house and techno. 

As you'd expect from DJs with residencies at Katerholzig and Watergate respectively, this is music primed for the dancefloor, each intricate rhythm no doubt testament to Bond's years of training and experience as a drummer. 

The title track is deep and spacious, with a spoken word sample and eerie interlude of feedback that shows the duo have more than a few beguiling tricks up their sleeves.

'Ion' meanwhile is a masterclass in sub bass, a relentless groove that expands and contracts around body and mind, precision-engineered for peak-time deployment. 'Jane's Addiction' rounds things off, stripped back, with a dub techno sensibility to its circling reverberations; it's intense, hypnotic and utterly immersive. 

Across all three tracks, it's the little details that stand out: the split-second snatch of distant choric voices that offers a moment of respite in "Jane's Addiction", the shimmering vibes and wind chimes of "Affects The Spirit." Much more than functional, this is the work of exceptional imaginations.

After the unbridled success that was "Volkwein", Super Flu's collaboration with The Dortmund Philharmonic, the always on point Monberry label now revisits the package with the help of some fine contemporary remixers, namely Kollektiv Turmstrasse, Monkey Safari and Bebetta.

Super Flu, aka Herzblut Recordings regulars and German pair Felix Thielemann & Mathias Schwarz, really conjured up some magic with the original so these remixes, which reinterpret in fine style, are more than welcome.

First up are Kollektiv Turmstrasse, a rare act that infuse their sound with something more - extra soul, depth and meaning. On their remix of the title track, they go for a trademark deep, brooding and slowly unfolding vibe with subtle synth modulations, buried drums and a rising sense of tension.

The curious and off kilter German duo Monkey Safari are up next. First they rework 'Bratzke' with a sensitive sense of touch. Underlapping, rubbery drums roll below churchy and hymnal chords. Softly spoken vocals add intimacy and you can see this one really making for quite a moment on the right dance floor. Secondly, they serve up a digital bonus remix of the same track that makes less use of the vocal and places plenty of emphasis on their lush arrangement and true sense of musicality.

Lastly we have Bebetta, a playful producer who infuses her music with charming melody and a real sense of personality. She has also recently won the Tresor Newcomer Award for her impressive DJ sets around Berlin. Her version of 'Volkwein' is patient and spacious. Glowing harmonically it soothes mind body and soul with playful patterns and clever use of filters.

This EP is an elegant and magical release that proves house music can be so much more than a physical and functional thing, and can instead stir real emotion when in the right hands.

As we mentioned before, Siamese will not just be a platform for beautiful music but should also a playground for different kinds of art. As you might have already noticed, our artworks are images of hand-crafted pieces and with this Various Artists EP we are taking things one step further. Every track gets its very own artwork and all four artworks will be included as 30x30cm sized prints inside the first run of the vinyl!

The A1 cut 'Something In Between‘ by ourselves is starting off this EP. Right about one year ago when we worked on a first attempt of our debut album we didn’t quite came to an end a few tracks stayed with us. This is one of them and we felt the intro character of it is a good way to lead into this series. 

A2 is delivered by our close friend and partner Lehar who teamed up with Olderic, a respected DJ, producer and promoter from north Italy who is around since quite a while (check out his Cirq club in Venice). Their contribution 'Il Sole' follows the melodic route initiated by 'Something In Between'. 

On the flip side we finally get the chance to introduce Shiffer, a young and very talented musician from Basel. 'Drunk On Hope' demonstrates groove, emotion, depth and much more that makes it the perfect pick for B1. Watch out for more to come from him on Siamese!

Closing the EP on B2 is ‚Monkey Mind‘ by Toto Chiavetta. 2016 was a great year for Toto, what an awesome album on Yoruba followed by a trippy-afro-house Record on Innervisions. 'Monkey Mind' continues exactly there, straight forward Groove without any compromises.

                  The track came out in January 08 on Future Classic, backed up with a Soultourist remix of "You're Out or In?". In other words, it's a Drumpoet release in disguise. The virus keeps spreading ;-)
                  Concerning my remix, I wanted something with more "ooomph" than my previous tracks...judge it for yourself, but I think this one is on a rave tip!

If you think of the UK’s best techno’s most prolific techno labels, Soma Quality are right there at the top. For the last 25 years Slam’s imprint has put out consistently killer music from some of 4/4’s most leading edge producers, with the likes of Funk D’Void, The Black Dog, Surgeon and Schatrax all making frequent appearances across the imprint’s back catalogue. 

One of their more recent signings is Rebekah, the Birmingham-born producer who first cut her teeth DJing in the late 90s. After a busy touring schedule early on in her career she became a part of Chris Liebing’s CLR label, before Soma picked her up for an EP in 2015. Earlier on this year, they also put out her debut LP Fear Paralysis, an album spanning the breadth of contemporary techno.

Rebekah’s next drop on Soma will be an EP of remixes from Fear Paralysis, with the likes of Slam and JoeFarr reworking some of the album’s best cuts. With their return to Farringdon just around the corner this Saturday, Slam sent us over their hard-hitting remix of Rebekah’s Code Black to premiere ahead of their appearance.

What’s Up Desert Hearts Family,

The next EP on the label comes from Hot Creations Queen and long-time friend of the family, Anabel Englund, alongside Desert Hearts mainstay, RYBO. Titled “Call U Rite Back”, this EP is without a doubt the most soulful release on the label thus far.

The A-side is laced up with the sultriest of vocals from Englund while RYBO lays down the perfect beat to match the vibe. It’s deep, it’s poppy, and it’s amazing. The B-Side, “Just For The High”, sees Anabel’s lyrics thrown over a moody tech house beat from RYBO and fellow DH producer, Lubelski. Finally, remix duties come from one of our favorite producers at the moment, UK based Mark Jenkyns. To round out the release, Jenkyns delivers a perfect kick up the ass to “Call U Rite Back”, making it all the more accessible on the dance floor.

About the Ep:
Solar Distance is an imprint headed up by UNER, and like the label, has a deep and melodic sound incorporating elements of both house and techno.

The new Solar Distance release is from Yamil Del Rio who is better known to many simply as Yamil.

Yamil is an artist who since starting to make music in 2011 has built up an impressive fan base with DJ plays and charts coming from the likes of Solomun, Black Coffee, Lee Van Dowski, Marco Carola, Nic Fanciulli and Luciano.

With such an impressive list of supporters his music has found its way onto labels including Glasgow Underground, ElRow Music, Toolroom, Saved Records, Witty Tunes and Nervous Records.

Not only is Yamil an accomplished producer he has also received DJ bookings in many European countries including Germany, Netherlands and Italy.

Showcasing his deeper and more melodic side with tribal percussion and ethnic influence, this house focused release has been crafted with a keen attention to detail.

Opening the EP is “Eros” using cosmic melodies and epic synths layered with percussive shakers and congas. The growling bassline also adds to the tracks intense vibe and it’s topped off with muffled vocal chants that state the words which give the track its name.

Second on the release is “Lost” that continues the melodic style with building synths that combine with tribal percussion. Painting pictures of desert landscapes, the track has Arabic style vocals and a sound that some might consider spiritual.

Finishing things off is “106” that’s got a low-slung groove and downtempo vibe centred around sampled live percussion. With soothing sounds and delicate vocals the track has a subtle oriental influence, and although it might not be an obvious club track, it’s the perfect mood setter.

My inspiration for these remixes was to play with this concept of opposite spaces, and tailor it to how I am trying to develop my work, personally. 

Spaces can completely change perception of sound. Opposites seem to inspire me: I am as fascinated with an anechoic chamber where all acoustic reflections are non-existent – as I am with a highly reverberant space, such as an auditorium or hall. 

As an artist who's known more for writing music suited for dark spaces, I find myself battling against the expectations that surround this context frequently. The Dark reinterpretation is my familiar ground; the Light is essentially a rejection of that.
