'long march crashed north of the maldives' (2021) is a piece for solo piano composed especially for the Canadian pianist Stephen Eckert.  It was first performed as a longer iteration at Ensemble Allure's concert 'PALIMPSEST' in January 2022, by Stephen Eckert.

This version, which is shorter than the version performed in January 2022, is the definitive version of the piece.

H. P. McGowan is an award-winning composer and interdisciplinary artist based in Toronto. His music has been described by colleagues as ‘contemplative’, ‘expressive’, and ‘imaginative’, often bringing attention to sparseness, fragility, and environment. His concert music has been influenced by the aesthetics of the Wandelweiser Collective, the Cagean tradition, and the Canadian artist Jack Chambers.  His most recent music and research-creation projects involve just intonation, indeterminacy, and using methods of composing borrowed from early music.

H. P. earned a Master of Music in Composition degree from the University of Ottawa in 2021, during which time his research and creative activities were funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

H. P. co-founded Ensemble Allure, an interprovincial new music ensemble with chapters in Ottawa, Montreal, Halifax, and Toronto (ensembleallure.com).  He serves as a board member at Ottawa New Music Creators (onmc.info).
