جنگ‌های ایران و روس، اقدامات عباس میرزای نایب‌السلطنه، قتل گریبادوف روسی، و در آخر میرزاتقی‌خان امیرکبیر و شاه شهید؛ همگی دست به دست هم دادند تا در 1230 هجری خورشیدی، روزگار تازه‌ای در این مملکت آغاز شود؛ صدای زنگ دارالفنون یا صدای آغاز مدرنیتۀ ایرانی!

در تاریخ طولانی مملکت این نخستین بار بود که دولت مستقیماً اقدام به تأسیس آموزشگاه نمود و تمام و کمال، مخارج تأسيس و نگاه‌داری و ادارۀ آن را بر عهده گرفت و اولین دفعه بود که دولت برای خود مسئولیتی در امر تعلیم و تربیت قائل شد!

مجموعه‌ای پربار از «اولین»ها که در ساختمان همسایۀ ارگ سلطنتی رقم خورد؛ دانش‌آموزانی که هرکدام قصه‌ای پررنگ بر تاریخ این سرزمین رقم زدند.

دارالفنون به دور از صدای زنگ و هیاهوی بچه‌ها، در شلوغی خیابان ناصرخسرو، چشم به راه آیندۀ‌ مبهم خویش است!
