In this week’s roundtable discussion, topics ranged from AI decoding a mysterious manuscript to the Eugenics law in Japan, all falling under the theme of science and technology.
 
This episode talks about the advancement of technology and how AIs are used to make groundbreaking accomplishments such as decoding the Voynich manuscript, which has been a baffling cryptographers since the 15th century.

Also, a Japanese woman has filed a lawsuit against the government for forcing her to be sterilized under the Eugenics Protection Law. Several questions are raised during this discussion, including the question of ethics.

Lastly, we discussed Sophia the AI and her appearance on the Tonight Show hosted by Jimmy Fallon. While Sophia has interesting features, her facial expressions and sense of humor raise some doubts.

For this week’s interview, we talk to Mohamed Wafik, a graduating student from electronics and communication engineering and vice president of the institute of electrical and electronic engineers at the AUC student branch. He talks about artificial intelligence taking over humans and the predictions of singularity.

We also hit the AUC campus for “AUC Question of the Day”, asking students if they think AIs will replace humans in terms of jobs within the next 10 years and they’re responses were quite interesting.

Mayan El-Sayed is an Egyptian actress as well as a Theatre and Film student at The American University in Cairo. She began her acting journey during her senior year in high school and has managed to make a name for herself in the entertainment industry over the past few years. In this audio documentary, she discusses the impact her career has had on her personal and academic life.

This audio feature was produced by Engy Moheb for the Audio Production course at The American University in Cairo, taught by Professor Kim Fox (@ohradiogirl) in the Fall semester of 2018.
