in 2009 I moved into The Rat Palace, a studio in Hobart. Its been the epicentre of so many projects and I have shared the space with some amazing artists of all disciplines. I have hard drives full of jams from this time and will share a few over the next little while as a way of saying farewell to the space. This one is from August this year when myself ( Bass) and old band mates from an outfit called Hexfarm Dane Renshaw (Drums) and Phil Bywater ( Tenor Sax) found ourselves all in the same country for the first time in many years. So we dusted off some musical cobwebs one evening. The photo is of the last Ute load leaving the studio, Intonarumori strapped on the back - not quite sure where the next studio is yet !

If We're Not One Then Let's Be Water ~ Full Version ~ OUT NOW

The last song I made and I thought it fits this Ämpers@nd project. It's pretty 'heavy' and gloomy and bears a lot of tension (just like "Frozen Dissolution"). Because it has a feeling of melancholy and the gloomy atmosphere I didn't want this to be the last track on the EP. I made this one farely quickly. To be honest I think it's just a bit to long and repetitive. On the other hand it draws you in and takes its time to develop a nice atmosphere. When I listen to it now it almost sounds like a background soundscape for a doommetal track (except for the high tingling sounds).

I found out today that John passed away. John participated in the Naviar Haiku challenge for over 4 years, almost every week, and shared both his music and poetry with us. He'll be deeply missed.

"John Hinks, aka FlownBlue, was a prolific and talented composer, and a regular participant in the Haiku challenge. Aside from his solo project, John was also involved in multiple projects: ‘Windfall Light‘ (with Jim Tetlow), ‘Abstract Blue‘ (with Kevin Buckland), ‘Light Fragments‘ (with Steve Escott), Szukanie (with Michał Wojciechowski), and Meadowlight (with Emma Reed)."

Disquiet Junto # 0652 challenges us to tell a favorite tale through music and sound. My response tells one of the stories of the House of Leaves, by Mark Z. Danielewski. The title of the piece is taken from a line by the musician Poe, whose album "Haunted" is a companion to her brother's book.

The confident explorers pass through the mysterious door, and spend days carefully mapping the blank walls and floors and arches of the winding passages beyond. The House responds with unearthly growls and the scrape of extruding stone. Halls elongate. Doorways appear and disappear. Corners rearrange themselves into inexplicable intersections. Stairways yawn down into a darkness deeper than the center of the earth.

The stone grinding and other earthy samples were created by rubbing and scraping two slate coasters together, slowed down and layered.

You'll want to bring sturdy, reliable headphones as you explore the House of Leaves— but they won't help you find your way back out.
