I seldom work like this: creating a charged “full steam” pattern and placing it at the end of a crescendo, then moving backwards removing stuff till there’s nothing left at the beginning. I did it with drum programs a lot, but also with repetitive stuff (pianos, guitars) à la Reich/Riley. I like to have an idea of my “tutti”, my maximum peak in density and intensity, then going there from zero.
This track, recorded today Friday November 10th 2023, started with a programmed drum beat (using for the first time in decades my good old Alesis D4 module that remained unplugged in my rack, just to fill a space)
To complete I added two tracks of a Matrix 12 synth and cello samples (noisy)
The patter is 16 beats long but never in 4x4 time signature, it does something like 7x8 + 6x8 + 3x8
The synths are in straight 4/4.
The weirdness of the drum patter becomes evident as we progress and more elements appear.

The photo is mine, I can’t recall what that is. Paris 2019, it says in the folder…

About this interpretation: 

My 'younger brother' here is my (much) younger self in the early 1980s, pictured here, when I proudly owned an Octave Cat monosynth and a 4-track portastudio to make music with. What you hear is pre-planned; each part played by hand, multitracked, and bounced down to extend beyond the 4 cassette tracks available. So, for example, drums were recorded part by part, as was each note of each chord, each sound created from scratch - with no presets ... So, please be kind to my 'younger brother' before judging TOO harshly! ;-)

This is an original mixdown to stereo cassette, no editing or remixing - including the terrible 'drum break'! - so it couldn't be more authentic! Enjoy! 😜
