Among the four great masters of Japanese haiku, Kobayashi Issa (1763-1828) was the most prolific: during his lifetime he wrote over 20,000 haiku, hundreds of tanka, and several haibun.

This track came together slowly, organically, over a period of weeks. Finishing is often a fraught exercise and this one was no different. I am thankful for the timing of this week's disquiet junto, and the finishing prompt—it reminded me of this track and helped nudge and motivate me to finally complete it and share it. 

The title reflects the sound. When recording and mixing it, I was struck by how much of its sonic feel reminded me of the early pioneers of synthesis. Rather than move away from that sound, or stop and permanently shelve it, I opted to lean into it and just went with it. It wasn't pre-planned, quite the opposite, it just happened without effort or heavy conceptualizing. Maybe its ease of coming together—nearly fully formed with just a few takes—is why I neglected it, till now, and resisted calling it done.

This week's Disquiet Junto prompt, "Reverse Resolution", challenged us to finish something that we had left unfinished in 2024. 

During the holiday break I wrote a new piece for an upcoming album from my Sudre's Violin postpunk project, and just for fun produced it as a recording of a "rare live performance". My intention was to also record a canonical "studio version" of the song at some point. So why not now?

If you try to dance to this song, I will not be held responsible for any damages or injuries that occur. Features Yamaha piano, a lead instrument made from a tortured dobro sample, synthethic bass, hand-programmed drums, and some vintage pads.

Finishing Touches (disquiet0680)

picked up an ableton live session from last year, with a recording from my modular system - notes at the time mention using a matrix mixer for effects sends with feedback, one send to delay and another to beads, with a chord voice going in - revisiting this recording, i ended up layering two slower copies pitched down -1 and -2 octaves and working in some field recordings.

Marco from Naviar Records couldn't find any information about a haiku poet whose pen name was Senjo. He came across this poem in The Penguin Book of Haiku, but there's no mention of his/her life or other works. However, he liked it so much that he decided to share it anyway and hopes you'll find it inspiring, too.
