Máscaras, comprised of three Portland music scene veterans (members of Sun Angle, Deer or the Doe, O Bruxo, Cat Hoch, Paper/Upper/Cuts, and literally dozens of others), is what happens when an off-the-cuff jam session between friends really, really works. Even in its recorded form, “it’s a jam with themes that live and breathe,” the band says, “leaving room for the unexpected.” The trio, comprised of Papi Fimbres (drums), Theo Craig (bass), and Carlos Segovia (guitar), plays heavy, propellant psychedelic music with surf-rock twang and mathy sensibilities. They call it “maximalist indigenous psych,” and while it’s not exactly the kind of music that one would normally identify with Portland—these are, after all, three brown dudes in the whitest city in America—they have become local favorites since their low-key formation in 2013, placing third in Willamette Week’s prestigious annual Best New Band Poll earlier this year.

Máscara vs. Máscara, the band’s first proper release, is made up mostly of songs that were written in the band’s first few jam sessions, and they are bursting with the energy of invention. Opener “Burgers & Balrog” is a surf-rock micro-epic that squeals with spiraling riffage from Segovia; “City of Ruins” finds Fimbres pummeling his set as Segovia plays intricate, Assyrian-sounding licks; “NewYorican” features playful interaction between Segovia and Craig, while Fimbres whips out the shakers and plays a latin beat (Segovia and Fimbres also play in Orquestra Pacifico Tropical, a cumbia group with over a dozen members). These are urgent, intense songs, but they’re also playful. It’s the sound of three homies making exactly the music they want to make, for no one else but themselves. It just so happens that people love it.

Being a human is weird. Sometimes I ask questions of the questions I ask and accidentally slip into winding, floating, downward spirals of dysphoria, dysmorphia or good ole fashioined out-of-body experiences. I am fascinated that living nightmares appear pretty to others. 
I put stuff like that on paper and those are the words of my songs. 
Sometimes the music comes to me in dreams and nightmares. Sometimes it haunts me or forces itself into my consciousness, popping into my brain jelly like the uncontrollable flashbacks. Voila, art. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

KV Hopper is a Portland-based visual artist and musician whose work bridges experimental sound, design, and collaborative performance. Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, he discovered music early through his mother’s collection of 1960s American soul and classic Middle Eastern records. That blend of cultures—and hours spent exploring the family’s Wurlitzer piano—set the foundation for his lifelong relationship with sound.
As a teenager, Hopper became a founding member of At the Drive-In, contributing bass and songwriting to the band’s first two releases and touring extensively throughout the Southwest. He later moved to San Francisco, studying industrial design and music technology at California College of the Arts (CCA), where his projects spanned from experimental music apps to handcrafted electronic instruments built with recycled plastics.
His performance history includes a 2007 collaboration with British artist Anthony McCall at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) for the interactive light installation You and I, Horizontal III. Hopper’s current project, Long Twins, continues his focus on interdisciplinary collaboration—most recently on the 2023 album Everyone in Water, created with lyricist/vocalist Elizabeth LoPiccolo and choreographers Lili Macatangay and Katerina Vitiaz.
Hopper’s latest album, Taped Baskets was created in collaboration with Croatian vocalist, Doris Banovic accompanied by modern dance video performances by London based artist, Bun Kobayashi. Taped Baskets is set to be released on Northern Geographic in 2026.
