Nusantara Tripping

Let me take you on a journey through the majestic beauty that is Indonesia. Nusantara - the Indonesian word for Archipelago, is a testament to the diversity of the islands nation. With over 3000 islands, there are so many flavours to get inspired from in Indonesia. So let's go island tripping across my homeland, and enjoy the sounds of this great Nusantara nation.

Each track is a selection from Indonesian inspired producers that titled their track with an Indonesian word. Simmering through the mix is a variety of sound samples of traditional instruments and voices, such as the Balinese gamelan or tracks that represent the violence during the occupational period by Dutch colonisers.

HÖR X AIAIAI CHALLENGE: Nusantara Tripping - Halim Ardie

STAGE BOUNDARY SONGS: a mixtape inspired by The Act of Killing 

Initiated by DJ /rupture, Stage Boundary Songs is a musical response to Joshua Oppenheimer's award-winning Oscar-nominated film The Act of Killing (2013). Jace Clayton (DJ /rupture) and Oppenheimer collaborated on a series of art-activism works in the 90s. Following that spirit, Clayton decided to produce Stage Boundary Songs, inviting Filastine and Indonesian vocalist Nova Ruth to curate the musical mix.

Nova digitized gems from the rare vinyl collection of the Museum Musik Malang. She selected psychedelic folk, rock, and soul made in the decade surrounding Indonesia’s 1965 coup. This is rounded out with Filastine's own productions and other contemporary strains of Indonesian music, along with samples of dialogue from the film, and field recordings.

Rupture worked with TAoK co-director Anonymous and researcher/translator Richard Curtis to choose a selection of poems by Wiji Thukul, incorporating them into the mix in Indonesian and English. Wiji Thukul, a dissident people’s poet, is an icon of the country’s leftist democracy movement. Only a handful of his writings have been translated. Several are heard here in English for the first time. Thukul was disappeared by President Suharto’s anti-Communist 'New Order' regime in 1998. "I'm not a news-making celebrity," begins one of Thukul's poems, "but am, to be sure, bad news for those in power."

The cover artwork is adapted from a woodcut by Thukul’s daughter Wani, herself a poet. It was confiscated by government security forces in 1996 during a raid on Thukul’s home.

Crowned: A Quarantine Mixtape was created on the ship Arka Kinari during a 14-day quarantine at anchor in the bay of Hilo, Hawaii.  Corona was just a local beer when the ship sailed from México bound for Indonesia. The pandemic caught the crew mid-Pacific, the borders quickly slamming shut for all the nations along the planned route: the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, and Indonesia. The ship diverted north to Hawaii, one of the few landfalls still accepting vessels at sea. Ironically AK is a project to promote resilience to the disasters of climate change, promote energy-autonomy, and bring people together. But disaster came sooner than anybody imagined, plunging us into an anxious purgatory.

We are now ruled by the crown. An invisible germ is our surprising global dictator. Like all royalty it is a parasite, and like all royalty it need to be overthrown. But as we retreated indoors we witnessed nature rebounding, the skies empty of pollution, and oil become near-worthless. This needn’t be an either/or choice, human well-being and the planets well-being aren’t mutually exclusive. Can we manifest a future of internal and external health, making this crisis into a portal? Or are we only capable of backing away from apocalypse when nature moves the battle lines inside our own bodies?

This mix reflects what I’ve heard these last weeks, filtered through the prism of the pandemic. You'll hear a lot from Mexico, the influence of the sea, and the technique of Hawaiian guitar applied to electronic music. It is a slack-key mixtape, with very little beat matching or key mixing. Because the moment calls for rhythm collisions and dissonance.

California born, Indonesian bred, Halim Ardie is a staple is the Bali house scene. Splitting his time between hosting events in Bali and DJing, and he used to represent Indonesia by covering the music scene for the music media company Pulse Radio. Halim has cemented his name as one of the most sought after DJs in Indonesia; as well as coming up in the Southeast Asia circuit, by being a part of the Joy Collective's Rainforest Pavilion stage at the famous Wonderfruit Festival in Thailand. The Rainforest Pavilion is a "conscious clubbing" initiative to use proceeds and profits from events to rejuvenate Indonesian rainforests by well literally, buying hectares of land for preservation.
Halim with his diverse taste in music has been able to share the stage with Tiesto, Richie Hawtin, Black Coffee, Duke Dumont, Solardo, Above & Beyond, Hayden James, Claptone,Shiba San, Marshall Jefferson.
