The Mass for the Parishes is one of the very first compositions published by Couperin and one of the only two works intended for the organ by the composer. It is a work of his youth.

In 1689, François Couperin became the title organist of the Church of Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais in Paris, a post reserved for him since 1679, on the death of his father Charles (1639-1679), who had himself taken over this office from his older brother Louis.

That same year 1689, he married Marie-Anne Ansault, daughter of wealthy bourgeois who brought him a comfortable dowry. It is the following year that the collection of two masses for organ appears.

The masses composed by Couperin in this context are in the tradition of his predecessors, organists with great instruments in Paris.

Low Key Gliding

The khaen is an ancient mouth organ from Laos and NE Thailand.  It's the grandmother of the harmonica.  Hal Walker plays the khaen in a non-traditional way. After listening here, please go in search of traditional khaen playing.  Do a search for "Morlum" music and see what you find. Enjoy.
