Since 2007 Discotexas has flown the flag for quality disco and leftfield House music releases from a wide array of artists out of its sunny base in Portugal. Now, for the second time, the label is compiling some of its most popular cuts alongside a selection of unreleased exclusives that will soon see the light of day as singles packages.

The title is Discotexas Picnic II, a nod to the fact that this release shines a light on known and unknown artists in one big family gathering much like... a picnic! Importantly this is richly musical centered around disco and house music. It is emotion-full and fueled by organic and human ways of doing memorable tunes.

There are many highlights along the way and unreleased tracks at time of compilation release include opener Moullinex – ‘To Be Clear’ (RAC Remix), a prickly, slo mo and vocal led jam bursting with colourful synths and real instruments. Others include the strident boom bap and real sounding percussion of Jay Lamar & Jesse Oliver’s ‘Cul De Sac’, Da Chick’s radiant and pop leaning ‘Lotta Love’, the Xinobi remix of Justin Faust’s ‘Space Rhumba’ and Xinobi’s ‘Puma’ (Moullinex Remix).

Elsewhere the cosmic funk of Jesse Oliver’s ‘Oceans’ (Mirror People Remix) soars to the twinkly night sky with glistening arpeggiated melodies, 80s leaning chords and a healthy dose of disco dazzle, whilst edit kings Psychemagik do their inimitable thing on a remix of Mirror People’s ‘Kaleidoscope’ and turn it into a prowling, nagging, dark disco number that really works its way under your skin with its celestial keys and slightly haunted late night vibe. Wherever you look here there is pure and modern disco gold from some of the genre’s finest producer’s as expertly A&Red by the close knit Discotexas family.

I got the opportunity to officially remix this classic song to coincide with the release of a new Donny Hathaway box set. I was given the original multitrack master of the studio version (different from the live version)and it consisted of 8 different instrument and vocal tracks (as opposed to the more usual 24 tracks) 
When I take on a remix, my first goal is to make it work on a current dance floor. I like to stay very close to the originally recorded sound and In most case there's plenty to be reworked on the multitrack master to achieve this. 
This case proved a little different as there were few rhythm elements I could use to fit within current standards of club loudness levels. So I decided to take a slightly different approach, and add a new set of (acoustic) drums,  to bend the original Soul vibe a little towards Disco territory.

Ready for take-off from Soul Clap Records mission control is a very unique release beaming directly from the mothership itself. On our recent journey flying alongside George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic, we've had the distinct privilege of meeting some of the many insiders who oil the multi-faceted funk machine. An incredible example is Chuck "Da Fonk" Fishman, who along Clinton's nephew Sa'D "The Hourchild" Ali have became our liaisons to Dr. Funkenstein himself! It is no surprise that these gentlemen have explored their own musical directions outside of P-Funk and it is with great honor that we present FSQ!

FSQ is a production team led by Chuck "Da Fonk" Fishman featuring contributions from Sa'D "The Hourchild" Ali, G Koop (part of George Clinton's production team), Chas Bronz (Bostonian and friend of Soul Clap Records) and One Era. The name is an acronym for "Funk Style Quality" - three elements that make up the core ethos of FSQ's sound. 

Just as FSQ derives from deep musical history, so does the latest record called "Zulu Congo Call".

In Fishman's words:

"In about 2005, [we] started working a lot with members of the free jazz movement, John Coltrane acolytes and the like. We were introduced to saxophonist / flautist Prince Lasha who was living in Oakland via Philadelphia based saxophonist / flautist Byard Lancaster who previously joined [us] on several releases. Both legends have since passed on, which emphasizes our passion to try and record with members of the greatest generations of musicians. I was happy with what myself and G Koop did with Prince Lasha, reinventing his 1962 song with Sonny Simmons, "Congo Call" from a straight ahead jazz number to a disco funk song, "Zulu Congo Call" but the song never saw a proper release."

This EP features a reworked original by Chas Bronz plus remixes from One Era, AbJo (from the Soulection crew) and Mr CV, all curated by Chuck "Da Fonk" Fishman. Lastly as a musical bonus we've included FSQ's superb remix of Nick Monaco's "Naked Is My Nature", which takes a total bath in Northern Soul and throwback psychedelic feeling!

This is my 6th CHIC Organization remix that will be available as a bonus (digital & vinyl) to the upcoming 4 x CD boxset. The original version was part of french iconic pop singer Sheila's King Of The World album that CHIC produced in 1980. It was the follow up to the cult Spacer single. When the original analog tapes were transferred extra unused takes were found. The CHIC band were rehearsing the song and in the process recorded alternate guitar and piano parts that due to the then available technology couldn't be used in the original final mix. Current tools allowed me to sync the unused parts with the rest of the used takes. My remix is quite a "bourgie bourgie" like version in the spirit of the CHIC classic instrumental workouts like Sao Paulo or Savoir Faire.
