新潟の最西端に位置する糸魚川市は、宝石箱のような街なのかもしれない。地形的特徴や名所などを地図に書き記してみると、世界に誇れるものがぎゅっと凝縮して存在していることに気づく。ころんと丸い小石を海岸で拾いながら街を眺めれば、その背後を覆うように連なる日本百名山を含む美しい北アルプスの山々までが目に入る。海・街・山が織りなすダイナミックな風景にため息がこぼれる。豊かで厳しい大地、自然とともに強くしなやかに生きる人に心を寄せる旅へ。

Situated on the western tip of Niigata Prefecture, the city of Itoigawa is something of a jewelry box. Scrawling down the topographical traits and famous places on a map, you realize that it is crammed full of world-beating spots. As you pick up the round pebbles on the seashore, a glance over the city reveals the dramatic backdrop of the Northern Alps, including several of Japan’s most celebrated peaks. Time to take a trip into this bucolic yet unforgiving land, where locals agilely coexist with nature.
