Montreal-based electroacoustic composer Jeremy Young's new record, Amaro, is more like a suite of meaningful multi-disciplinary duets than a new addition to his growing catalog of pure solo material. Yet it centrally documents an iterative, systems-based approach to making music that Young has been developing and refining through live performances and improvisations in his studio for close to 3 years. This sonic "system" is not modular but tactile, performable, and tourable, and includes: 3 individual oscillators (sine, square, triangle) tuned microtonally by hand in real time and filtered, amplified surfaces and objects that make up the pieces' rhythmic foundations, tape loop fragments of found tape, and EMF signal captured and routed across the tonal and textural signal paths.

Amaro includes contributions from artists here in Montreal such as Deanna Radford, Markus Floats, and Ida Toninato, and those based in New York and beyond, like Vito Ricci, Dolphin Midwives, Pauline Kim Harris, Tomonari Nishikawa, and Johannes Bergmark. The album's beautiful cover visuals come courtesy of frequent collaborators, China Marsot-Wood and Thaïla Khampo. It's an experimental suite of sonic material, adventurous, and not over-produced; neither ambient nor noise, synthesized yet performed in real time as if it were an instrumental record.

The first full-length collaboration between Burning Pyre and Canadian Rifles, “The Snipe & The Clam” encapsulates a shared sensibility and vision. Initially seen together on the Vienna Press/Vaagner compilation “A Declaration” in 2019, which was followed up with a second piece last year on Burning Pyre’s Opal Tapes debut, “United Angels”, the two artists cultivate a unique aural world with a singular voice.

Taking a contemporary yet deeply romantic approach to ambient music, “The Snipe & The Clam” showcases a blend of luscious synth melodies and harmonics, set against a heavily organic dynamic backbone. An apt representation of both artists’ methods and modus operandi, opulent glimmering drones flow with a sense of narrative, contributing a magical watercolour-like quality to the album’s eight instrumental pieces. As if lightness met the restraint of a disciplined wrist - every sharp note a pensive flap of wings across its airy background.

“The Snipe & The Clam” often feels like an emotional exercise on the stoppage of time, gliding between loving gestures and precise crescendos, delivering both a flourish of exposition and a reflection on intimate moments. A definitive summit in each respective artists’ discographies until this point, “The Snipe & The Clam” is an elegy to tenderness and finding beauty in minute details.

Logic Moon and Atmøsphäre come together for the first time to bring forth ‘Fading’, a carefully assembled study of light and dark - or rather, the convergence of the two. Rarely is one without the other, and their ever changing interaction inspires curiosity and humility. One minute light dances in the dark, and the next minute the shadows mime their way across illuminated canvases.

Logic Moon’s deliberately faint compositional style, coupled with Atmøsphäre’s ear for musical space, combine for something noticeably more affective than their previous solo outputs. Hints of early Tim Hecker and Bersarin Quartett shine through, placing the listener in a quiet contemplation, as controlled thought flickers in the stillness. Light fades in, and then fades out again.

Warmth - The Longing

In February of 2022, as Storm Eunice worked its way across the UK, two people, namely Greig Baird and his partner Susie Baird set out for a rare weekend away on the North Coast of Devon. The weather was rough, but life affirming. The North Devon coast spectacular and dramatic; made more so by the waning storm.

This collection is a set of sonified memories; moments in a particular location at a particular time. A creative recalling. A set of sound postcards if you will.

Based in Bristol, LTO first made waves as part of mysterious electronic collective Old Apparatus. As a solo producer, LTO has since attracted attention with three albums.

LTO's ambition to create ever more ambiguous and far-reaching sonic environments, whilst retaining something of the familiar and physical, have led him to take inspiration from imagined landscapes of the folklore of his Welsh ancestry and of the planet Mars. Both images of enchanted forests battling enraged giants from the underworld and unimaginably hostile planetary events guide this work of great magnitude.

In 'Daear', LTO explores an expansive sound pallet of swelling synths and noise, ambiguous string instruments, thunderous percussion, unearthly voices and his signature sound the piano, mostly processed beyond recognition. The result is a mysterious and deeply textured journey that could be set in both the distant past and uncertain future, on this planet or beyond.
