In this episode of How The World Begins Again singer Elizabeth Hilliard meets with composers and sound artists, Rhona Clarke, Una Lee and Jennifer Walshe and finds out how they found the imposed solitary life that we all experienced in the pandemic. She learns how this was a time for focussed creativity and work, for discovering new ways of creating music, and it allowed time to reflect on how, as artists, we are all individuals on our own journeys.

How The World Begins Again

A series celebrating the lives and work of women composers and sound artists working in Ireland presented by singer Elizabeth Hilliard.

In this RTÉ lyric fm radio and podcast series, singer Elizabeth Hilliard meets twenty women: composers and sound artists connected to the island of Ireland. They share their stories, their inspirations, creativity and challenges as they connect the listener to their work. In the series Elizabeth explores the wonderfully alive and energised ecosystem of music in Ireland today, talking to women from diverse backgrounds: both academic and non-academic, including an astrophysicist, a computer programmer, artists coming from different places, cultures and countries and reflecting an age range from twenties to seventies, but who are all connected through their music on the island of Ireland. In the eight part series listeners are introduced to their music, ranging from piano trio to orchestral, from games music to improvisation. The series title - How the World Begins Again - is taken from a line in Eavan Boland's poem CODE, about how women; artists, scientists, poets and composers alike, become visible and heard through their work and make the world anew.

In this first episode of How The World Begins Again singer Elizabeth Hilliard meets with composers and sound artists, Jane O'Leary, Natalia Beylis and Jenn Kirby and finds out what place and belonging means to them. She discovers how meeting new people from different backgrounds inspires them in their work and how they've explored new beginnings in their lives and brought that into their music and soundcraft. Music heard in this episode includes Jane O'Leary, From Sea-Grey Shores, Natalia Beylis, Invaded by Fireflies and Jenn Kirby, Terre Pop.

Doctor Nerve is a rock band led by Nick Didkovsky, that has been annihilating the boundaries between rock, metal, improvisation, jazz, and experimental music since 1983.

After decades of collaboration and friendship, UK-based saxophonist Paul Dunmall and UK-based drummer Mark Sanders realized they had not made an album as a pair, featuring their respective instruments. On Unity (2021), they improvise uncomplicated, poetic and uplifting avant jazz melodies. This natural musical chemistry is exemplified on their track, ‘The Quiet Mind’ where Dunmall’s tenor saxophone paints a cohesive melody over Sanders’s percussive abstractions. This project is one of 28 that the pair has collaborated on over the span of their careers, and one of many that Sanders has made with 577 Records; it marks Dunmall’s second release with 577 Records, following Onosante (April 2021). Their full album, Unity, will be available on CD on May 14, 2021.


ABOUT THE ALBUM

After decades of collaboration, scores of musical projects and 28 releases, old friends and professional musicians might find themselves searching for either novelty or a return to the foundations. In the case of UK-based saxophonist Paul Dunmall and UK-based drummer Mark Sanders, it was both. The two musicians have had prolific careers—and made much of their work together—but in a recent phone call, they realized that they had never created a project that featured just their preferred instruments, saxophone and drums. Seeking to correct their oversight, they improvised Unity, a tempered and simple presentation of the instruments they’ve mastered alongside each other. Its five tracks offer unpretentious and uplifting avant jazz, exhibiting both their musical affinities and their natural collaborative chemistry. Following Onosante (April 2021), this marks Dunmall’s second release with 577, and will be one of Sander’s many projects with the label, including albums with Rachel Musson, Pat Thomas, Dave Tucker and Thurston Moore. Unity will be available on CD on May 14, 2021.

Shifting and switching from No Wave skronk to interstellar guitarist-as-drummer virtuosity, from stampedes of miniature Pomeranian Buffalos to All-You-Zombies heterophonies, Han-earl Park (박한얼) has been performing beautifully messy, joyously difficult, ambiguous and discordant improvised musics for over twenty years.

Park is the mastermind behind ensembles including Eris 136199 with Catherine Sikora and Nick Didkovsky; Juno 3 with Lara Jones and Pat Thomas; and Gonggong 225088 with Yorgos Dimitriadis and Camila Nebbia; and performs as part of a duo with Richard Barrett. His ensembles have appeared at festivals including Jazz em Agosto (Lisbon), EFG London Jazz Festival, Brilliant Corners (Belfast), Freedom of the City (London), ISIM (New York), dialogues festival (Edinburgh) and Sonic Acts (Amsterdam).
