Mosaic is the art of crafting an image using a collection of small, diverse materials. In this piece, that concept is realized sonically using the orchestra as source material. Each instrument contributes only fragments to the larger musical world. In the beginning of the piece, these fragments are small and fleeting, creating a highly percussive texture, akin to viewing mosaic art up close. But as the piece continues, these fragments begin to overlap and expand, creating a sustained texture, akin to stepping back and observing the image in its entirety.

This is an acoustic sculptural piece – the unusual disposition of the instruments on stage and the use of voice and close/open pipes create the illusion of sound coming from the inside of a three-dimensional body, at times fully manifesting itself to the outside as the body opens its oral apparatus. The three instruments are positioned in a line perpendicular to the audience. The detuned viola faces the audience and projects its sound forward, while the bass flute (positioned facing sideways) works as a sonorous bridge to the flugelhorn facing the back of the stage.

The piece starts with an embryonic representation of a creature that breaths sound in and out. A feeble heartbeat can be heard moving inside this creature – from the open mouth (viola) to the depth of the lungs (flugelhorn) – in synchrony with the breathing. Vocal sounds born inside the body move forward towards the sculpture’s mouth. The creation of proto-words manifests the presence of the Homo Sapiens (the wise/knowledgeable hominid). The complex nature of Sapiens moves the piece towards a progressive splitting in space of its personality. The three instruments, that at the beginning were cooperating as integral parts of a single body, start acquiring contrasting characteristics and becoming more and more independent. The complex nature of the human being, so much studied and yet uncontrollable can fascinate, confuse, scare…we are humans, perhaps all-too-sapiens.

Hangrui Zhang is a Chinese composer who is true to his artistic personality and dedicated to creating a unique voice in his music. His compositions often draw inspiration from non-musical elements, such as pop culture, visual arts, and the environment.

Hangrui began his formal music training in the United States. He earned a Master of Music degree in composition from The Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA. In 2020, he obtained an Artist Diploma in composition from the Royal College of Music in London, UK.

Hangrui's music has received recognition in competitions such as the American Prize, the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Awards, the Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute, the iSING! Composition Competition, and the Donald Sinta Quartet National Composition Competition. His compositions have been performed in Europe, the US, and China by various professional chamber ensembles and orchestras, including the Donald Sinta Quartet, Eastman BroadBand Ensemble, Talujon Percussion Ensemble, Yarn/Wire, Symphony Number One, members of the Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, and the Kunming Nie'er Symphony Orchestra.

Currently, Hangrui is pursuing his Doctor of Music degree in composition at the Royal College of Music under the supervision of Kenneth Hesketh. He holds an RCM Studentship. His current research project explores the cross-genre and cross-disciplinary influences from Japanese pop music and Western modern paintings, both of which he has enjoyed for many years.
