On 4/22/22, I headed to the Ellicott Rock Wilderness in the Southern Nantahala National Forest in pursuit of capturing pure nature sounds.

This trip was incredibly successful, yielded many noise-pollution-free recordings, and treated me to the beautiful sound of spring in this remote region.

The sounds of a new day in the African bush. This album was recorded in Northern Tuli Game Reserve in Botswana and features the diverse sounds of birds and wildlife in an ecotone of mopane woodland and arid savanna.

This field recording was collected on August 7, 2007, on Ocracoke Island, North Carolina, on Garrish Lane in the Village of Ocracoke during a thunderstorm.

Predawn is welcomed by Eastern Yellow Robin and Golden Whistler in a stand of Coachwood forest understory within old growth Tallowwoods towering 60m overhead.  The morning bird and insect chorus gradually builds to a complex crescendo which includes many species, among them the Superb Lyrebird, Bassian Thrush, Pouched Frog (Assa darlingtoni), some dingo howls, and some mystery sounds I can't identify! A steady breeze blows high in the canopy and the background thrum of insects reflects the rich biodiversity.

In the depths of the tropical rainforest of Khao Yai, birdsong filters down like shafts of sunlight through the dense foliage above.

Bulbuls, barbets, drongos, flycatchers, doves and laughing thrushes are heard calling occasionally during their forays through the canopy. Meanwhile a soft susuration of insects permeates the tropical air as the morning progresses. From far off in the distance come faint hints of gibbon song.

This is a single track, unedited recording, a spacious ambience changing gradually as time passes.

Khao Yai Rainforest - Album sample

This is an edit of recordings from the highland rainforests of the Huon Peninsula in Papua New Guinea.

These recordings were made during a recent trip to PNG with several colleagues from the Australian Wildlife Sound Recording Group. This edit contains some highlights from the four weeks we spent trekking and recording in the mountain forests above 2000m. 

In the near future I'll be making these recordings available in full, but for now, this is some of what we encountered.
