I got this new program from Cinesamples called "Piano in Blue". It was on sale for 80 bucks and decided to give it a whirl. Surprisingly the team at Cinesamples went through a TON of work to create this beautiful simulation of a 1949 Steinway D concert grand piano. To just give you an idea of what they had to do, here's the list of equipment they used to create this gorgeous piano sound.

1949 Steinway D via Neve 8078 Console
Close/Vintage – 2x Neumann M49 near the lid
Mid – 2x B&K 4007 at the tail of the piano
Far – 2x Sennheiser MKH20′s in the hall
Studer A800MKIII  24 Track Analog Tape Machine

Most sound engineers will know exactly what these are, but to break it down, the Neve 8078 is probably one of the most sought after consoles in the audio world. The microphones are prestigious and the best of the best and then to take it further to capture that analog sound, they went with the Studer A800MKIII.

What's remarkable about this program is it's legit. Everything from the three different mic positions (Close, Room, Surround) to the ability to bring up the tape hiss to give it that vintage sound to the authentic sound of the Steinway D. It literally is gorgeous! I was sold on the moment I heard jazz being played on it.

So I decided to try my hand at it, being a jazz pianist and brought back a familiar tune that we all know. It's a tad bit early for Christmas, but what better way to show off the piano sampling than with a good ol' Christmas tune. I tried to imitate the styling of vince Guaraldi with this piece so hopefully this will convince most of you who want to do jazz piano to grab this program because it's definitely worth it!

All recorded in Logic Pro 9 on a Macbook Pro 13 inch 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 duo with 8 GB of RAM. Monitored via Tannoy 501a Active Monitors out of an Apogee Duet 2. No mixing was done other than a compressor and limiter on the master track. All sounds are naturally from the program.
