Samer Soltan brings his debut LP to Renaissance…

Hot off the back of ‘Elba’ on his own Santuary imprint, Samer Soltan now lands at Renaissance to deliver his debut LP, ‘Solitude’. And what a journey it’s been to get to there, both creative and literally.

Originally hailing from Tunisia, it wasn’t quite two years ago, in the middle of a pandemic, Samer took the brave decision to move to Brussels. “The relocation was two-fold,” he explains, “I had secured a place to study electronic production at college here, but I also knew I had to be in mainland Europe to give my career the best chance of succeeding.”

Once settled, officially qualified and with a legion of admirers and supports that include Dixon, Âme, Denis Horvat, Joris Voorn, John Digweed, Frankey & Sandrino, plus many more, Samer finally turned his hand to that rarest of commodities in dance - an actual LP. “I know they’ve become a bit of a rarity in this digital age,” he continues, “but it’s always been an ambition, just like releasing on Renaissance, which I grew-up listening to. It seemed a very natural realisation bringing the two together.”

For Renaissance’s part, the decision to pick-up the album was an easy one. “Album’s are so tricky. Producing twelve tracks (as is the case here), that are as diverse and consistently brilliant as ‘Solitude’ is an amazing feat, “ confirms Renaissance’ Geoff Oakes.

Kicking-off with the infectious lead single, ’Chkoun’, the stage is set for a production masterclass that takes in indie-funk with ‘Crazy’; the haunting electronic melancholy of ‘Is This A Dream’; ‘No Time For The Past’s’ beautiful melodic ascent and the twisted, genre-defying skills of ‘Unknown Me’, ‘Time Machine’ and ‘Cyberpunk’, which walk that in-demand line between indie and techno. He even manages to bring things to a string-unwinding, deep house conclusion with the Kate Bush-esque, ‘Control Your Mind’. It is truly virtuoso stuff.

“I called the album ‘Solitude’ because it perfectly captured the sentiment of this journey; from the move to the creative process itself, putting the album together, I did feel lonely and exposed at times. It’s very rewarding to finally get it out there,” Samer humbly concludes.

“In the Immensity of Time" — as it is titled — tells the story of a celestial odyssey, a collision of mind against heart in the vastness of space, a light glimpsed in the deepest darkness. Through sound, Binaryh captures the moment when two becomes one, in the simplest of ways.

This EP is a dual tale told from two sides, starting off with Sagan and its rhythmic energy. Like a searchlight, the track wanders through foreign sounds and deep percussions, building euphonic momentum and seeking harmony in the void. The answer to this burning call comes through the track Druyan, which beautifully glides between a floating sense of peace and high-intensity peaks, with rolling waves of hard-hitting bass tying them together. 

Like their brilliant namesakes (Carl Sagan & Ann Druyan), these two tracks work in tandem to find meaning in nothingness, orbiting around each other in a frenzied dance. Citizen Kain’s remix of Sagan comes to complete this stellar narrative with a resounding sign-off. The vibrating, haunting track brings the EP to an end with a dark undertone and a driving tempo that unfolds with purposeful tension…
