"TOPLAP DÜSSELDORF is a group of artists that has existed since 2018 to explore and promote live coding. In order to make this increasingly popular technique of composing and performing electronic music more widely known, the group is releasing with _EXECUTE Vol. 1 the works of Düsseldorf artists together with the works of the international live coding scene as a compilation for the first time.

In their performances, live coders reveal the inner workings of software, manipulate it directly in the source code, and in the process improvise to create music or moving images. The process of programming is made visible to the audience through a projection of the computer screen. Live coding works in all music genres and is shown in many livestreams and all over the world in concert halls, clubs and on so-called algoraves.

What is unique about live coding is the combination of cool computer science, strictly rule-based and merciless in its treatment of errors, with musical improvisation, which is usually free and open to deviations from the usual. In this way, the live coders fill the sobriety of programming with aesthetic life, making the hidden beauty of code audible and visible to connoisseurs and lay listeners and viewers."

Während sich Künstler oft mühen, in ihren Werken möglichst viele Schrunden zu glätten, um Artefakten den Anstrich des "Natürlichen", "Organischen" zu verleihen, sind "natürlich" und "künstlich" für mich nur scheinbare Gegensätze. Alles ist natürlich künstlich, zumal Menschengemachtes oder -vermitteltes letztendlich nie ursprünglich, naturwüchsig, sondern mehr oder weniger bearbeitet und damit natürlich zu unterschiedlichen Graden artifiziell ist. Wo uns die Geläufigkeit der überfeinerten Version bereits zur zweiten Natur geworden ist, wirkt künstlich Gemachtes gar natürlicher als sein Natur-Vorbild. Zum Vorschein kommt dies etwa in individuellen Überzeugungen davon was "gute Kunst" sei.

Die Vogel-Klänge in Oiseaux d'artifice sind die Sache an sich, kein Verweis auf etwas "jenseits" ihrer selbst. Tatsächlich handelt sich's also mehr um Malerei als um Ausdruck von Empfindungen. Der weit überwiegende Teil der zu hörenden "Vögel" sind keine Natur-Aufnahmen lebendigen Federviehs, sondern mit ca. 90 unterschiedlichen mechanischen Vogelstimmen "künstlich" erzeugte. Die scheinbaren "Musikinstrumente", welche unter anderem Zitate aus Athanasius Kirchners Musurgia Universalis wiedergeben, wurden ebenso wenig live gespielt wie die Vogelstellen-Zitate aus großer Musik der Vergangenheit. Eine Auswahl schöner Vogel-Volkslieder wurde zuerst nach tonsetzerischen Standards sorgfältig eingerichtet und anschließend mit phonetischer Spezialsoftware manipuliert, obwohl es sich um eine reine Soundscape handelt, in der gar keine Sprachklänge auftauchen. Dasselbe Kunst-Schicksal ereilte eine zeitlich um ein Vielfaches gedehnte Gartenrotschwanzaufnahme. Als Emblem und Menetekel zugleich betritt die künstliche Nachtigall, die Maurice Ravel -- der virtuose Connaisseur raffiniertester Künstlichkeit -- in seiner Villa in Montfort L'Amaury aufgestellt hatte, die Szenerie. 

Um vorgefundene kommunikative oder emotionale Muster zu reduzieren, habe ich mich bemüht, alle Klangquellen möglichst instrumental einzusetzen. Zusätzlich werden technische Eingriffe mitunter bewußt inszeniert und herausgestellt, z.B. ostentatives Panning oder mutwillige Lautstärkeeinbrüche beim Eintritt neuer Takes, die an den Ducking-Effekt alter Kassettenrekorder mit automatischer Aussteuerfunktion erinnern. Die Hand im Bild bleibt mal deutlich sichtbar, mal wird sie bewußt verschleiert - "fake news" lassen grüßen. [hm 2018]


Most of the bird sounds to be heard are not nature photographs of live poultry, but were artificially created using about 90 different mechanical bird calls. Some additional "musical instruments" present excerpts from Athanasius Kirchner's "Musurgia Universalis" among other things. These weren't played live, nor were the quoted "bird" extracts from great musical works of the past. On top, a selection of bird folk tunes was first carefully "set to music" according to "theory-harmony-standards" -- and subsequently destroyed by special phonetic software (although Oiseaux d'artifices is a pure soundscape in which no speech sounds appear at all). And in the midst of a stretched redstart recording suddenly the mechanical nightingale appears, which Maurice Ravel - the virtuoso connoisseur of refined artificiality - kept in his villa in Montfort L'Amaury. Thus many acoustic illusions are created, trompe-oreilles which are only occasionally disturbed by technical interventions or volume changes. Random snapshots? Of course not.

Harald Muenz (he/him)
is a German-Italian transdisciplinary artist realising instrumental & vocal, peformative and radiophonic works with an artistic focus on phonetic composition & Ars Acustica.

Harald's compositions have been commissioned by Ensembles Mosaik, auditivvokal, hand werk, Apartment House, Modern, musikfabrik; by radio stations such as Hessischer Rundfunk, Westdeutscher Rundfunk, BBC, Deutschlandfunk, DLF Kultur, among others.
Harald's works have been performed and broadcast internationally and have been documented on several CDs (portrait CD nearly-fast with Ensemble Mosaik at Coviello).
Frequent collaborations with experimental poets (Florian Neuner, Mathias Traxler, Cristian Forte, Christian Filips, Roža Domašcyna, among others)
On the VR platform Second Life, Harald (aka Cuirec d’Erc) has realised several interactive sound installations and has been a member of the Avatar Orchestra Metaverse (aom) since 2017.
Harald is also active as a multilingual speech performer (trio sprechbohrer), author and lecturer.
Harald's music has been occasionally described by others as ‘worldly,’ ‘non-conformist,’ or ‘provocative.’
