The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.

A live set from DJ Garth at the infamous SF Come-Unity party in 1994 along with Simon and Jeno. The Come-Unity party was a monthly mid-week party in San Francisco that started in 90's. It was initially on every 1st Tuesday of the month  and then moved to every 1st Wednesday of the month in 1993. The event was a major influence that helped shape the underground house and techno scene in San Francisco that we have known to love today. I would describe it as a grown up rave with around 1000+ in attendance with DJs that played forward thinking creative dance music (nothing commercial). The first time I went to a Come-Unity party (around 1999 at 1015 Folsom) I was blown away. I am happy to share this mix of SF dance music history with you. Enjoy!

In advance of the next release titled Grapeseed Meditation (which includes a stunning Oona Dahl remix and will be out in June), I wanted to take you back to the sound of lush and trippy breaks.

This +two hour set was created it in the studio coming off a fun weekend DJing in San Francisco.  San Francisco was once a funky town but now it's straight laced and predictable like zeros and ones.

My take home from the weekend activities was that I needed to make a mix that resembled some of the  funky sounds I was playing in the '90s.  I also needed to play some of my own unreleased music.  So I set about crafting this mix.  The first hour being quite subtle, and then at about the hour mark I veer into some heavier breakbeat sounds and then throw in a bunch of my own music for good measure and a classic or two..

There are half a dozen unreleased tracks in the mix, and i'm still trying to figure out what to do with them.  Maybe they'll become available on a new album or maybe you just gotta enjoy them in this mix.  Thanks for listening +++
