Political cabaret performer turned protest-pop princess

Edinburgh-born Ripley made her name on London’s cabaret scene with her critically acclaimed satirical show Like A Sturgeon. In the summer of 2019, Ripley took a break from the stage to focus on writing and independently releasing her own original music. The first single to emerge is a collaboration with Scottish producer Allan McIntyre titled Electric Democracy. A political space-disco stomper, Electric Democracy is a reflection of Britain’s political and societal crisis.

The Swedish pop sensation Helena Johansson has just released her brand new single 'FAITH'. Last summer the critics acclaimed her first single ‘My Kind of Love’ which got immediately voted as “Pick of the Week” by Sweden’s National Radio P4. Her second single 'In Your Eyes' was also picked up by the radio listeners "Pick of the Week" on the same national radio station.
 
After five years working with the Music City's elite (Nashville TN) including a collaboration with the dance icon Martha Wash, Helena is now back in her hometown Stockholm and releasing her debut EP ‘From the Ground Up’ in February 2014. It gives you an electro-pop sound with flavors of trip hop and the 90s. With MAC Cosmetics on board with her and a previous release party performance with one of Scandinavia's most well known designer Dagmar, Helena is ready to take on the music scene and entertain the audience with her debut EP “From the Ground Up”
Seven years ago, Helena Johansson bought a one way ticket to Nashville. Little did she know that she would wind up writing music for the dance icon Martha Wash and collaborate with Grammy award winning songwriters.
Helena didn’t know anyone in Nashville, but before long, resident fellow Swede Dan Ekbäck came in contact with her. A music industry veteran with a wealth of experience working with artists such as the country legend Garth Brooks and the Swedish singer Jill Johnson, Ekbäck was quick to spot Helena’s talent. After listening to Helena’s demo, Ekbäck introduced her to some of Nashville’s most prominent songwriters. Helena’s first foray into co-writing music was with Liz Rose, who is best known for penning many of Taylor Swift’s hits, including ‘White Horse’ which resulted in a Grammy for Best Country Song in 2010, as well as writing material for LeAnn Rimes and Jewel.
At the beginning of 2013 one of the songs Helena wrote during her time in Nashville, ‘It’s My Time’, was released by Martha Wash, the disco diva best known for the international hit ‘It’s Raining Men’. It was the second single from Wash’s comeback album.
From singer/songwriter to pop artist Over the years that followed, Nashville became home for Helena. During her time in the States, she met British producer Denis Ingoldsby, the music publisher and songwriter behind British pop sensation Delilah, dub step artists Flux Pavilion and Dr P and Russian pop duo t.A.T.u. They started writing songs over Skype and after many sessions she decided to move back to Europe in order to continue their collaboration. Ingoldsby's background within electronic pop influenced Helena to incorporate that sound into her own music.
“To start off with, my music was more singer-songwriter inspired, but with time and the more I wrote, I knew that pop music was the genre closest to my heart. I am so grateful for my time in Nashville and what it gave me, but I felt I was done with that chapter and the music I wanted to be part of was to be found in Europe,” Helena says.
