El vals llegó a estas tierras y removió el suelo peruano, aunque a un ritmo europeo, a mediados del siglo XIX. Pero fue Alejandro Sáez León y otros compositores de su generación, que pertenecían a los estratos sociales bajos de la sociedad limeña, quienes le darían el sabor del pueblo. Antes de él, los compositores y las composiciones de valses peruanos guardaban mucho de sus raíces europeas y eran hechas solo para piano y sin letra.

Sáez recreó ese vals vienés poniéndole el sentir de los barrios marginales de la sociedad limeña de ese entonces como eran Mercedarias, El Cercado, Monserrate y Malambo, guardando siempre las raíces del Perú. Formando el vals criollo, dice Carlos Cerquín Hidalgo, voz del grupo Sabor del 900, que nuevamente complace con otro disco de los inicios del siglo pasado en el Perú: Recuerdo mío, en el que interpreta las composiciones de Alejandro Sáez León, tal cual se tocaba y cantaba en sus tiempos.

RECUERDOS DE SÁEZ
El compositor nace alrededor de 1890 y su obra la realiza en las primeras décadas del siglo XX. Sáez, cuenta Cerquín Hidalgo, junto con otros compositores de esa época, hace esos primeros valses criollos: Fue conocido porque grabó en dos oportunidades en la Victor Machine, que después se convertiría en la RCA Victor. Para Victor Machine, Sáez grabó con otros dos compositores, en 1917: Miguel Almenerio y Justo Arredondo. Después de eso, Sáez, en 1928, hace un disco con los hermanos Ascuez, Augusto y Elías.

¿Quién fue Alejandro Sáez León? Se supo que compuso el vals La cabaña y que había grabado con los hermanos Ascuez.

Sáez empieza su carrera musical desde joven, integrando lo que se llamó en ese tiempo La Estudiantina Chalaca, alrededor de 1917. Desde entonces, integraría diversos conjuntos musicales. Es a raíz de que integra esta estudiantina que él graba formando dúo con Manuel Almenerio. Ahora, en el transcurso de los años se conoce muy poco hasta 1926, en que nuevamente se les ve a Sáez en los medios de comunicación impresos (Mundial y La Crónica), donde lo publicitan animando con su conjunto la fiesta de Amancaes.
