The greatest tragedy of human existence is not how we have all been insurmountably sad at some points in our life, but how despite that we continue to make others around us so very sad. But then I look at the newschannel with all these people struggling desperately to survive, against war, against famine, against their country being torn in two, against poverty, against earthquake, flood, rain or hurricane. Against all odds, still celebrating Christmas, still finding means to be happy and make others happy, defeating death day after day in this Herculean test of will, while i sit here dipping my vain sorrows in my usual litany of morning coffee and cigarette melancholy, in my climate controlled comfort breathing perfumed air while outside my glass haven, the fumes of this city's toxicity roil like the wisps of my smoke inside.
All this bright sky and people fighting to live, and I still can't figure out how to live without you. And then, a sudden reminiscence, a Christmas night amidst fairy lights, under the mistletoe..from long ago..
