Based on a MIDI from vgmusic.org. This is the ending music from the 8-bit version of Sonic 2. In the Game Gear version, this was the bad ending music, but for some reason the Master System version used this for both endings, despite the Good Ending music being in the ROM.

Now this is a track that definitely doesn't get enough love in the remixing field. Props to ForeverSonic of RadioSEGA for premiering this on his Random Hour show, and to EAR for the remastering!

Composed by Tomozou Endo for the 8-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the original ending theme plays when Sonic has not collected all of the Chaos Emeralds by the game's supposed final stage, Scrambled Egg Zone, and fails to rescue Tails as a result.

What enforces it as the game's "Bad Ending" is the heavy implication (fan/headcanon) that Tails dies. Yes, then-4 year-old Miles Prower dead. Not a happy thought right there...

So, I put together an arrangement of the tune with that specific theme in mind. The name "Shattered Departure" is inspired by the failed chance to get to the Crystal Egg Zone (the true final zone should all Chaos Emeralds be attained) and save Tails' life from Eggman's grasp. A crystal shattered into shards! As for the word "Departure"... well, take a guess.

Now, I THINK "Rumbling HWY..." for Mission Street (by the brilliant Jun Senoue) from Sonic Adventure 2 got shoe'd in there somewhere...
