Hi there and welcome to our latest track in our 'Themes' sound set, 'Merlin' 

This track was first started nearly a year ago and was originally composed as shorter track, but whilst working on it John made a great suggestion that it should be extended to capture the true meaning behind it. As soon we completed the new sections the track came to life, so a big thanks to John for his skillful final arrangement.

So now for the story that inspired this piece..................

Well, to start with Merlin has always been one of my favourite characters from Legend. From family holidays to Wales and Lake District and after many years exploring Wales with my own family, it's easy to see how this figure is so embedded in our folklore. 

I was also a real fan of  the 1981 film 'Excalibur' by John Boorman, in which the late Nicol Willianson played Merlin. 

In this adaptation of the Arthurian Legend I was captivated by the numerous sub plots that run through the story. Of these I was fascinated by the portrayal of love affair between Merlin & Nimue. That in all his wisdom and greatness, his weakness is his heart.

I've researched the tales behind this and it describes that Merlin feel in love with Nimue the first time he meet he when she was only 16 years old.  He was constantly at her side and she was fascinated by sorcery. Nimue accompanied Merlin on a journey so that she might learn his magic. Knowing that Merlin could take her unwillingly, she made him swear that he would use no magic to make her lay with him. As they traveled, Nimue became more and more afraid of Merlin's advances. In some versions of the legend, Nimue traded her love for lessons in sorcery. Merlin foresaw his own death, but was so smitten with Nimue that he was helpless to avert his own tragic end. There are different versions of his death. One version has Nimue tiring of him and turning one of his own spells against him, sealing him in a cave forever. Other versions have her trapping him in a bush or Hawthorne tree where his voice is sometimes heard. Some tales have him living forever in his confinement and others tell of his death or his descension into madness. 

Hopefully our track has captured some of the emotion from this sad love story, which ultimately brought about the demise of this Legendary figure, but we leave it to you to decide which way the tale ends...........
