Thousands of workers learned they were being let go—engineers, analysts, product managers—all swept away in another round of brutal layoffs. But at the very same time, Meta was frantically writing checks—millions of dollars, unheard of sums—not to rehire, not to bring employees back, but to poach a handful of elite AI researchers.

It sounds surreal, doesn't it? A company downsizing thousands of people while simultaneously showering tens of millions to entice maybe just one or two individuals. On one hand, Meta quietly increases the number of employees rated as "below expectations," a convenient justification to remove teams wholesale. On the other, CEO Mark Zuckerberg flies prominent AI figures for exclusive meetings at Lake Tahoe mansions, dangling offers upwards of 20 million dollars per researcher.

This isn't just another cost-cutting move or a reorganizing of company priorities. It signals something deeper and far more unsettling: a profound power shift in the technology industry. AI isn't just changing routine tasks; it's rewriting the rules of labor itself, creating a ruthless economy—one where just a tiny handful of so-called 10,000x individuals dominate, and nearly everyone else becomes suddenly, painfully expendable.

In fact, one Meta engineer, now laid off, put it in haunting terms: "They're paying twenty million for the guys who'll build the AI that fires the rest of us." 

Let that sink in for a moment.

There are echoes of desperation in Meta's actions. Last year alone, the company lost nearly five percent of its AI talent to rival companies. It’s not hard to see why: the global pool of engineers qualified to build the most advanced AI models is incredibly small—estimated at fewer than a thousand worldwide. Navin Rao, a leading executive at Databricks, compares it to the scarcity of NBA stars. When the talent market is so tight, companies fight relentlessly with their wallets.

But to grasp the stakes here, we have to understand something else: the "Nvidia tax." Meta is currently pouring billions into expensive GPUs to train its speech, language, and "superintelligence" algorithms. Each individual Nvidia GPU costs about $35,000 dollars; Meta bought more than a million of them this year alone. To afford this, Meta slashes its ranks of mid-career engineers, saving billions just to deploy it all again into hardware infrastructure and elite talent salaries. Those who remain face an AI relentlessly automating their roles, effectively crafting a cruel cycle of self-inflicted obsolescence.

Maybe what we're witnessing right now—Meta’s multimillion-dollar talent poaching spree—is just the beginning of something much bigger. We might soon see the market inflate even further, with top researchers commanding unprecedented salaries, creating insurmountable gaps between the elite and everyone else. We could also anticipate radical shifts within corporate governance—imagine, boards increasingly delegating pivotal decisions not just to executives like Zuckerberg, but to their latest AI creations.

Just how much will top-level AI talent cost by 2027, or in a decade? How many thousands more will quietly be displaced, lost beneath headlines of brilliance, innovation, and efficiency?

In the meantime, one thing remains heartbreakingly clear: the painful human costs remain invisible, overshadowed by lavish bids for AI's brightest stars.

Training a state-of-the-art model often requires millions of energy-intensive GPU-hours, typically housed in colossal data centers. It's a story we've accepted: powerful AI needs powerful machines.

But a curious recent development just might flip that narrative on its head.

Yesterday, Multiverse Computing announced they've secured $215 million in funding to deploy their revolutionary model compression technology—CompactifAI. This quantum-inspired tool promises to shrink the size of large language models by up to 95%. We've seen compression techniques before—pruning, quantization—each with tradeoffs in accuracy. But CompactifAI claims an unprecedented achievement: near-full performance, fraction of the size.

And what's truly remarkable isn't just what's happening at Multiverse Computing—it's how they're doing it. By drawing inspiration from quantum physics and their patented tensor-network method, they're enabling massive AI models like Meta's Llama-3 to fit comfortably on a device as humble as a smartphone or even a Raspberry Pi.

There's also, intriguingly, the environmental dimension. While smaller models consume significantly less energy per inference, critics warn that making AI models cheaper, easier, and more accessible could paradoxically lead to an explosion of their overall use. Will CompactifAI help us reach sustainability goals set forth in the EU's recent AI Act—or accidentally propel even higher cumulative energy consumption?
