If you’re a Melbourne, Sydney or Perth resident, chances are you’ve already heard of ‘Clipp.Art’. The Fitzroy based collective of music pals come together with like-minded local crews to throw lo-velocity dance parties under the “Sounds Like A Good Time” brand. Over the past six months, they’ve built a more-than-impressive portfolio of parties across Australia’s capital cities. Calling upon the deejaying talents of DJ Seinfeld, Ross From Friends, Bloody Mary, Demuja, DJ Boring, Coeo, Auntie Flo and more, on the reg. Apart from gifting us with these international treats, Clipp.Art offers space behind the decks to showcase burgeoning regional talent (Eduardo Muchacho, Georgia Bird, Shouse, James Pepper). Their current summer series of free events goes down every Sunday evening in Sydney’s “Byrondi” sector, with acts including Gerd Janson, Sandboards and Black Loops.

Clipp.Art takes another big step in their contribution to the local scene, with the launch of their own start-up record label. From February 2018 onwards, the new Clipp.Art imprint promises an ongoing series of weekly/bi-weekly digital cuts - complemented by the occasional limited edition split artist 12 inch. First up to the plates is Melbourne artist, Cassettes For Kids, with single release “Pleasure” - a smooth summer mover, built around a slow winding vocal drone that resolves itself inside an abrasive crescendo of shuffling paper-cut hi-hats and detroity pads. Add super-soaker levels of bass-line and you have the recipe for good times ahead.

For his Studio Barnhus debut, Laurence Guy connects the dots between the lo-fi ambient investigations of his 2017 debut album Saw You For The First Time, the warm club sounds heard on All I See Is Her, last year’s standout 12'' for Tokyo’s Mule Music, and the London-based dj and producer’s long roots in deep drum’n’bass and dubstep soil. Those roots, which have always been there as subtle rhythmical traces on Laurence Guy records, now appear more explicitly than ever, boosting the typically graceful harmonies and sooty samples of Guy's music with a new, profound energy. From the unswerving neo-jungle of Wildlife, through My Brain Is A Scrambled Egg with its dusty rave euphorisms, onwards to the hypnotic guitar ballad It’s Good To Try, this six-track EP is chock-full of the sort of unrestrained musical enthusiasm Studio Barnhus always stays on the look-out for. Making Music Is Bad For Your Self Esteem is at once Guy’s most experimental and most personal record so far, an essential addition to both the artist and the label’s catalogues.

Saul is a new duo composed of Barney Whittaker (Footshooter) and Jack Stephenson-Oliver (Vels Trio / Poppy Ajudha / Charlotte dos Santos).

The band, having debuted at Brainchild Festival in 2018, have spent the last couple of years working on material for this stunning debut EP Murmurations.

Featuring friends and frequent collaborators Brother Portrait (Steam Down), the 6 track EP simmers with a potent UK energy; paying homage to the sounds of Garage, Jungle and Broken Beat all in the context of the new wave of London Jazz - of which all members of this project are key players.

We are fortunate enough to be premiering the standout track "Earth Rain" featuring breakthrough London Singer Poppy Ajudha. The synergy between Jack on keys and Poppy on Vocals is clear; the two have been playing together for years and combine perfectly on this sun drenched contemporary take on the so called broken-beat style.

All in all, the EP is equally at home in the club as it is in the living room, owing to it’s balance of epicness and musicality. This is undoubtedly a product of London town and couldn’t fit more perfectly with the expansive sound of Rhythm Section INTL.

PREMIERE: Saul - Earth & Rain (feat. Poppy Ajudha)

I Gemin has been busy this year, contributing to compilations and multi-artist EPs from such labels as ISM, Midnight Riot and Editorial. Here the Russian producer strikes out on his own via what we believe to be his first outing on Slightly Transformed. The title track is a great example of his self-proclaimed "intelligent house" approach, combining woozy, sun-kissed soul, disco and jazz-funk samples with occasional filter trickery, a warming bassline and relaxed (and some would say rubbery) house beats. The slightly bolder and more up-tempo "Easy Love" is similarly groovy, with the producer wrapping punchy horn lines, wah-wah guitars, jazzy horns and occasional female vocal snippets above a more rolling house rhythm.

CBY03 shows another side to DJ Matpat's sound, deeper yet still full of energy. Dreamin' is an emotional summer jam that could make one feel nostalgic, not because of production techniques but from the airy, dream-state vibe a dancer would feel while the sun is setting.. or rising. 

On the flip, Philly staple Elvin T delivered a stripped back Dub, the perfect B-Side for a record that needed a spacey, nuanced accompaniment. A nighttime affair, switching to a soul searching and atmospheric feel with surging synths and bumping basslines.

Seriously vibey deep house filled with fresh faced percussion, blissful breakdowns and summertime chords. It’s pure sunset soundtracking business with a divine touch to make all your worries evaporate into the ether.

Dreamin'

PREMIERE: DJ Matpat - Dreamin' (Elvin T Dub)

The water was wild and dangerous as the boat moved across the dense, blue expanse. The sails were rattling against the frame of the ship and inside the cabins people began to get nervous and concerned for their own safety. There was a banging noise which was loud and oppressive - it hurt the ears and silenced alarms upon deck. The storm had been forecast and predicted for some time but nobody had known that it might hit with as much abrupt and abrasive force as this. The Pacific drums echoed loudly in the air as the clouds rolled in overhead. 

Jad & The is set to release a new EP described as "an ode to his ocean side upbringing". It draws upon a deep rooted love of abstract electronics and the ethereal sounds sometimes associated with dream house. The release will soon be available on Beats Of No Nation.
