This week's podcast initially began as a sequel to our episode about Irma Vep from a few weeks ago, in which Adam Nayman and Beatrice Loayza joined us to discuss Olivier Assayas's new HBO series. We had only seen four episodes at the time, and we wanted to reconvene our guests, now that the miniseries has finished its run of eight episodes. But as we dug into the film-within-a-film rabbit holes of Irma Vep, its commentaries on auteurism and autofiction, and how it blurs the lines between reality, narrative, and fantasy, we realized that it echoed the themes of another series everyone has been talking about recently: The Rehearsal, by Nathan Fielder. So this episode brings you a double dose of meta: Irma Vep and The Rehearsal, and the ethics of making movies about oneself, other people, and movie-making itself.

In this episode, we explore the synthesizer, looking closely at the history of this ubiquitous (and often debated) piece of musical technology, and investigating how and why it was first used in a variety African musics. Enabled by groundbreaking record reissues by synth pioneers like William Onyeabor (Nigeria) and Hailu Mergia (Ethiopia), disco stars like Kris Okotie, and South African superstar Brenda Fassie, we take you back to the ’70s and ’80s, listening to the birth of a distinctly African electronic sound.

Afro-Tech: Stories of Synths in African Music

They’re not lies, they’re “falsehoods”; it’s not racism, it’s “racially charged comments”; it’s not torture, it’s “enhanced interrogation.” For years, U.S. media has prioritized, above all else, norms and civility.

Mean words or questioning motives are signs of declining civility and the subject of much lament from our media class. However, op-eds explicitly advocating war, invasion, sanctions, sabotage, bombing and occupation or cutting vital programs and lifelines for the poor are just the cost of doing business. What’s rhetorically out of bounds - and what isn’t - is far more a product of power than any objective sense of "civility" or “decency.”

Where did these so-called norms come from, who do they benefit, and why is their maintenance–-even in the face of overt white nationalism––still the highest priority for many liberals and centrists in U.S. media?

Episode 40: The Civility Fetish

It’s a trope that dates back more than a decade, but the rise of Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has seen a recent resurgence in the liberal’s “Inexplicable Republican Best Friend,” a specific genre of concern trolling where a long-time Republican operative, politician or pundit offers supposedly well-intentioned “advice” to Democrats about how they can win elections, which always relies on avoiding veering “too far left.”

These takes––frequently featured as earnest appeals in liberal and centrist outlets––are ostensibly framed as straight-talk advice that should be accepted as objectively in the Democrats’ best interest, and never presented as an ideological argument that would otherwise make sense coming from a right-winger. “Republican hates socialism” isn’t that newsworthy, whereas “GOP operative identifies Democrats’ best interests" somehow is.  As with most ideological scams, it only travels in one direction: leftward. One seldom hears liberals or leftists give “advice” to Republicans about they ought to do to win.

But somehow the inverse isn’t true. Anti-choice, climate change denying, racist, rape apologist, warmongering, overpaid mercenary GOP “strategists” are treated like objective, neutral voices simply looking out for the best interests of the people and institutions they’ve spent their entire careers trying to destroy.

in this synthetic age where there hardly remain clear delineations between nature&technology, the moods chosen here were inspired by two ideas: 1) a flat ontology of digital objects at different magnitudes and 2) a recursive nourishing of the system, which i refer to here as gardening.  following yuk hui's furthering of simondon's philosophy of technics, users must adapt to the rhythm of the system of digital objects; yet, according to hui this system, being digital, is no longer one of cultural memory – as that of technical objects – but of future orientation (tertiary protention).  a looming question is what sort of problems does adapting to these rhythms produce, such as the increasing prediction and anticipation by digital systems.  but moreover, and of relevance here, how ought we to approach an organization of digital objects for a sustainable open future, that is, how might we tend to a productive garden of digital objects.  i hope that this mix finds listeners reflective of their own relations to digital objects, the rhythmic networks they may find themselves in, and that we may all design healthy algorhythmic lives. hope you enjoy.

Paradise Is a Frequency - Moods for Digital Gardening

@Euglossine (настоящее имя Тристан Вайтхилл) — мультиинструменталист из далёкой солнечной Флориды. Сам он свою музыку описывает как смесь из джаза, эмбиента, нойза и прогрессивного рока. Это сложная музыка, в треках редко можно отследить чёткие повторяющиеся мотивы. Мелодия постоянно меняется, летит вперёд, лавирует, практически останавливается и разгоняется вновь. При этом атмосфера треков остаётся почти неизменной: хоть это и непростая, порой даже драматичная музыка, в ней всегда присутствует лёгкость, грустных нот практически нет. Возможно, дело в том, что Euglossine во многом вдохновлялся музыкой из ранних компьютерных игр. Среди источников вдохновения он называет Chronotrigger, Kirby, Contra, Metroid и Castlevania. По крайней мере, с некоторыми из этих игр наши слушатели могут быть знакомы. Для Esthetic Joys Тристан создал микс, состоящий только из собственных треков, которые были записаны за последние полгода.
