Berlin-based duo Snacks drop an infectious four tracker on House Of Disco this October.
Forming Snacks (@snackslive) in 2014, New Zealand’s Rene Corbett and Germany’s Aljoscha Babel have been joining the dots between funk-fuelled disco and sultry house with releases landing on Pusic Records, Boogie Angst, hafendisko and Mule Musiq. As DJs they’ve been transforming dancefloors into all out bedlam with their upbeat and eclectic performances, whilst their party-focused productions have found a home in the record crates of Ben UFO, Detroit Swindle, Prosumer and Beats In Space’s Tim Sweeney.

‘Burnin’ inaugurates the package by dropping a laidback drum rhythm, piercing chords and soulful vocal loops topped with a fuzzy bassline. ‘Matinee’ then takes things into deeper territories with organic percussion, blissful synth swells and uplifting choral patterns, before ‘Deep Fry’ generates a compelling groove with smooth bass licks and rich string harmonies.

In demand Dutch duo @Fouk, who’ve appeared on HOD as well as Razor-N-Tape and Heist, deliver an offbeat take on ‘Deep Fry’ with delicate melodies, opulent pads and cosmic nuances resonating throughout. Finally, a digital only remix comes from fellow Netherlands-based pair Soultage, whose rendition of ‘Burnin’’ works with the original’s pianos and vocals to produce a new level of funk.

In a world of widening extremes, plastic fills the oceans, an insect apocalypse threatens the delicate balance of natural ecosystems and a million dead fish rise from the depths of the Murray-Darling Basin. Dread and hopelessness come naturally in the face of these overwhelming crises, but optimism still manages to persist. 

Harvey Sutherland’s rolling samba keeps a relentless pace, punctuated with a loping gospel mantra – they say there’s something in the water – delivered by Jace XL, whose past credits include live and studio recordings with Hiatus Kaiyote; backing vocals for Sampa the Great; and ‘Sacrifice’, a 2016 EP with Silent Jay released on Rhythm Section International. 

SOMETHING IN THE WATER is the first single from Harvey Sutherland’s new studio band, which comprises long-time drummer Graeme Pogson, percussionist Phil Binotto and bassist Luke Hodgson. It was recorded and produced at Harvey Sutherland’s velour-lined recording studio that might just come in handy as a survival bunker when the approaching apocalypse hits Melbourne’s inner-northern suburbs.

Something In The Water Ft. Jace XL

Harvey Sutherland, the Melbourne-born record producer, keyboard player, club DJ and bandleader, made a name amongst his hometown’s electronic underground with a string of cult dance singles. Early 12-inches like ‘Bermuda’ and ‘Priestess’ were records in love with classic soul and disco, but his debut album ‘Boy’ was guided by his obsessional traits and habits, ending up in a place he describes as “Neurotic Funk”. 

Boy has seen widespread acclaim since its release, with Resident Advisor noting “[his] sense of musicality has always been head and shoulders above his peers...his songs are full-blooded and fleshed-out…” His latest material is an exercise in techno minimalism — laser-focused club jams like ‘Hummingbird’ and ‘Nobody Like U’ set the stage for Harvey’s next chapter. 

His machine grooves are fired through a prism of crate-digging influences, from Todd Rundgren to Basic Channel and back again. His distinctive synthesiser tones have graced remixes and production for Disclosure, Khruangbin, Genesis Owusu and BadBadNotGood. A seasoned performer, he’s taken his live band to Glastonbury, dragged his Juno-60 into Berghain and turned the Melbourne Recital Centre into a full-fledged nightclub. Eclectic and groovy, Harvey Sutherland is Neurotic Funk.
