Showbiz!

This EP was produced in four intense days in Ljubljana as part of my one month GESTUS insanity (A large array of works produced in different methods in the span of 3 weeks opening at Cukrarna on 15/4/2025 and running untill 17/8/2025). I first wrote and scored four songs while putting together (with the help of drummer/musician Jaka Berger) a fictional band titled GESTUS - where each musician had an alter ego (with a name and a whole persona). We then had two(!!) rehearsal sessions where we honed the material and developed the alter egos - and on the third day the band performed the songs live (!!!) on the Radio followed by a conversation with them through their alter-egos. Thee songs are all attempts to grapple with current material and emotional conditions we share in our accelerated world. The ideas was that each musician had supposedly written their own song and thus the songs span several genres yet have subtle litte radical formal twists (Linda Ronstatd meets a Gospel rhythm / A Straight proto-punk motorik beat meets a vocal hymn / a trip-hoppy syncopations resolves in seemingly cheery disco and a group drone improv is accompanied by straight singing). The line-up is (fictional name first :) )

01 The New Age

For RA.1000, DJ Sprinkles' first mix in over a decade is a powerful meditation on the genocide in Gaza.

Dance music often relies on simple narratives: release, escape, unity. But those narratives can often feel inadequate, and even at times, hollow. Or, as Terre Thaemlitz might bluntly put it, just "shitty."

For her first mix in around 15 years, Terre Thaemlitz AKA DJ Sprinkles, challenges us to think differently. "I felt this 1000th podcast should reflect the moment in which it was made," she told us in her Q&A.

And what is this moment? Every day since Israel's 2023 assault on Gaza began, an average of 28 children have been killed. That's an entire classroom, every day, for over 600 days (at the time of writing). It's a staggering figure that only captures a fragment of the listless cruelty imposed on the strip.

Faced with such a genocide, what can music really do? How political can it truly be?  For their RA.1000, Thaemlitz gives us an unflinching rebuke to the idea that music should provide escapism. The mix weaves ambient fragments and jazz passages, woven around samples from Israeli media and the voices of outspoken Jewish critics like Gabor Maté and Norman Finkelstein. 

The result is not just a protest, but a document of our time. For Terre Thaemlitz, music is never just music. Her RA.1000 serves as a reminder that in an age of relentless suffering, the most political act is to reject the illusion of escape, and search for something greater.

Bringing out the big guns for you lucky people, here's a truly essential piece of late 90s hip-hop history. 
A selection of classic Rawkus cuts expertly put together by the Beat Junkies... I really can't recommend this one enough. Have to give a special mention to J.Rocc and Babu - as good as the tracks are throughout, the mixing just elevates it to another level. Absolutely on point.

The Infinite Hip-Hop Song Live!

Fire bars and rhymes, shifting bass-lines, mutating beats, elastic melodies all put together live into one evolving set using a custom-made digital interface. Developed from Khan's forward looking algorithmic music installation of the same name - the set relies on a vast database of original  beats, melodies, bass-lines as well as vocal units from ten specially written songs recorded in the studio with eleven rappers of diverse backgrounds.

Hassan Khan has been making adventurous music since his 90s debut in Cairo, and is considered one of the pioneers of experimental and contemporary approaches in the region. With tabla dubb (2001) he began developing sets that offer unique takes on various genres like New Shaabi in The Big One, Arabic Music in Taraban, New Music in Live Ammunition! Music for Clapping, String Quartet and Live Electronics and hip-hop in his currently touring set The Infinite Hip-Hop Song Live! Concert appearances include: Morphine Raum, Berlin (2024); Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin (2023); D-CAF Cairo (2023); Vega, Copenhagen (2023); Sonic Shaman Festival, Taipei (2022); Centre Pompidou, Paris (2022); Contact(less) Festival MAXXI L’Aquila, Aquila (2021);Maerz Musik Festival, Berlin (2013 / 2017 / 2018); Ruhrtriennale, Essen (2018); Intonal Festival, Malmö (2017); The Guggenheim Museum, NYC (2016); Portikus, Frankfurt am Main (2015) and The Louvre Auditorium, Paris (2012).
