Rapper/songwriter Wax is releasing his new mixtape “The Cookout Chronicles” on Friday, September 2, 2016.  The Internet rap pioneer has developed a dedicated following over the last several years, a following which is sure to embrace this project.  After finding major success in Europe with his hit “Rosana” and viral success worldwide with his creative video content, Wax is now in a place where he just does what he wants.  In creating “The Cookout Chronicles” over the last year or so, he just wanted to write and record “feel good shit."
 
The mixtape has more featured artists than any project Wax has dropped in the past.  The features include blues rap legend G Love, art rapper Open Mike Eagle, rapper and TV personality Awkwafina, and underground rap heavyweights Jerron Benton, Sahtrye, and Intuition.  As always, his twin brother Herbal T also appears on a track.  While Wax handles most of the production himself, his frequent collaborator EOM adds some beats, as do a few other producers.  Experimental bass guitar prodigy Mono Neon adds two tracks to the project.   
 
 The Cookout Chronicles is Wax’s most cohesive project to date.  Wax says that the project is designed to be listened to all the way through, as he intended to craft the perfect soundtrack to a backyard barbeque.  The songs are generally of the “feel good” variety, and showcase the rapper’s talent for intricate, witty, rap bars and also his deftness with melody and harmony.  From the bossa nova inspired “First Love” to the blues/funk jam “So High”, the songs can accompany a cold beer on the porch or an all out party.  For the hardcore rap fans, “Bulletproof” veers off the chill path, with an evil head nodding beat that would work well as the soundtrack to a worldstar fight video.  The mixtape contains an astounding amount of quotable rap lines, leaving the listener to repeatedly ask “how the fuck did he think of that?”

sign one is a producer and rapper from Orlando Fl.  In the early 2000’s sign and his crew, “jerk circuit” helped pioneer the “nerd rap” style and sound of hiphop and went on to create beats for many emcees since.

The newest album, titled “bottom dollar” was written between the years of 2012-2015 and recorded in the true signone minimalist fashion, utilizing samples from vinyl to create the beats and vintage equipment to record.  Known for his unique performance style and live playing on drum machines, sign continues to rock mic’s and bang on pads in the ozone.

Chicago based Fieldwerk Recordings continues its spilt instrumental series with Kill Switch, a collaboration featuring Minneapolis native and Doomtree alum Lazerbeak and Bay Area producer Edison. 
Kill Switch opens first with Lazerbeak who introduces himself with “Dedications”. The rich melodic vocals glide over a crisp, steady drum break, and as the hook unravels (listen to our dedication/this whole thing was made for you) it becomes clear the type of impression he’s looking to make; a friendly audible handshake to start the getting to know process. What ensues after is where Lazerbeak is at his best. Throughout seven songs, none of which extend much longer than 3 minutes, LB melds a wide range of styles. One moment he’s dabbling in warm synthesized loops (“Boots & Pants”) and rugged samples (“Torch Light”), and on others moody melodies (“Porch Light”). It’s a biting combination of sounds and rhythms that gives way to a classic, but all together new style of instrumental hip-hop. 
Edison, a budding producer who’s worked with Aesop Rock, Sole and 2Mex (amongst others), follows up Lazerbeak with a unique style of his own. “These Songs Are Rabies” ushers itself in with a menacing guitar riff and drum roll, which continues on slowly, rabidly and at a feverish pace. It’s an amalgamation of psych rock and heady boom-bap, and conjures up memories of hip-hop’s darker days. The sentiment echoes on, but not without rich and daring variations. “All Hell Hath No Pennies” reflects Edison’s craftsmanship with its meticulously chopped samples and broken rhythms. And for the final two tracks of his side (“No One Can Hear You, They’re Distracted” and “A Cure For a Case of The Wealthies”) which weave together seamlessly as if they were one long cut, Edison provides an eerie melodic warmth to his ominous death march.
