Working Title; a project in co-curation

In the postmodern world of today, the work of curators has become increasingly diverse. The job content has shifted from a simple model of guarding, keeping or acquiring a collection, to a compound model, adding the possibility of acquiring a semi celebrity status identity.

We are part of a generation that has spent their childhood growing up with an invisible third parent, the internet. We are able to discover music faster and easier than ever before. But even with all these options, an individual curator can never truly see the whole picture.

The idea for this project is simple and goes as follows;
Instead of curating artists ourselves, we will have others curate together. Our project can be seen as an exercise in joint curatorship. We have invited fourteen different collectives, labels and individuals who in their turn curated one artist.

NARA - Your Favorite Dish

Soo Intoit is a trans-femme, Korean-American, multidisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, NY. Her style meshes chaos and noise to join tracks across several different genres, with an emphasis on high-energy and bass. Her sound takes you on a transcendent journey, and will have you feeling a wide range of emotions. She works in the NY nightlife scene to produce events that prioritize QTPOC talent, such as her main project CRITICAL HIT, and is a member of NY-based collective Club Carry.

@nozagam is a solo project by French experimental-club producer Etienne Zastko who takes a bleak view of a destructive Anthropocene Epoch, in which “utopias can’t exist and we’ve lost our way in our blind devotion to technology”. The album pieces together a chronology of catastrophic events. A fictionalized soundtrack to humankind’s end-cycle. The abrasive textures and suffocating atmosphere immerse us into a total universe where everything that could have gone wrong has. Affirmations and tech bro optimism didn’t quite cut it. And if those disembodied voices that sporadically reach out are the survivors, that’s not good news.

The visual aesthetic of Zagam is one of fusion, a medieval plague doctor mask with a 23rd-century twist. “Anthropocene” mines a similarly disparate set of influences, spanning an evermore hybridized clubspace. Gqom, grime, industrial techno, footwork: everything is fair game. The rich musical background and hard sonic palette of Zagam make for a perfect match for the hybrid electronics approach of Unizone.

Safety Trance (aka @cardopusher) and @loser111 drop a three-track collaborative EP on @regrets_regrets, the imprint from DJ LOSER.

'Essence Reaver' is a best-of-both-worlds track, perfectly fusing the namesake styles of both contributing producers. A clever schism between spiralled trance and alarming sound design sampling, its sudden twists and corrupted layers keep attention levels on high alert.

I Smell It

'Dropbar' is the first single from Kelvin T's forthcoming LP 'Unlock Voice', which will release on 9th November via Absurd TRAX.

Kelvin T’s last recording, the 'Sedative' EP, was about self-discovery and finding his own voice. Having accomplished that, he was compelled to raise a different question altogether: "Is it possible to ‘train’...a synthetic sound to possess a voice and sing on its own?"

In 'Unlock Voice', the first full length album from Kelvin T, he avoids the lyrical mode- instead of treating sound as a means to communicate his own feelings, he wants to fashion a key to ‘unlock’ the expressive potentiality of each sound, each being an entity, a singularity in its own right. The opening track ‘Dropbar’, for instance, sees Kelvin fantasizing about what it would be like for kick drums to punch him successively in the stomach, all while a synthesizer melody coaxes him into submission. In ‘Escaped’, on the other hand, a bleeding synth groans pleadingly at the listener, making for an unsettling experience. The result of Kelvin’s latest experiments in sonic necromancy is a visceral, tactile, kinetic exercise, assaulting the nervous system like rave music from some abyssal cellar.

“Maybe, if there’s a soul locked inside a sound, can I teach the synths and the drums to scream at me and cry through the speakers? If synthesizers and samplers (no matter whether they are hardware or software) can talk, would they scream at their masters or sing while crying?”
