"I’ve known Knxwledge since before the x. I remember a young dreaded beat-maker working the graveyard shift of a dead-end job in Philly hitting me through his AIM app on his Sidekick. He does what he wants how he wants and on the low, he’s one of the nastiest cats on the beats. We’ve had a few firsts together and I love dude like a brother. 

Blu is as skilled as any rapper out today. I often think that folks en masse won’t fully appreciate what he contributes to the art of MCing till he’s through. I met him through an interview back in 2006. Fate and circumstance have crossed our paths several times since. 

We were actually roommates for a small stretch of 2009. One day, inside a modest two-story home atop Mount Washitaw in Los Angeles, we were going through the few crate of records I owned. I pulled out the European bootleg to Bilal’s Love For Sale I bought at Poo Bah Records a few months prior. 

“Daaamn, G! how much you want for this?” 

I didn’t know what to answer. I loved that album too much to price it. Then a lightbulb went off, “I’ll trade you.” 

“Trade me what?”

“A song. I’ll give you the record and you let me put out a song of yours.”

Blu laughed, gave me a pound and without a word took the record into his room downstairs next to the garage."

Back in 1931 in Clarksdale, Miss., one of the most influential soul/R&B artists was born. And had he not been shot and killed some 33 years later, Sam Cooke would be celebrating his 72nd birthday today, Jan. 22. The smoky voiced singer-songwriter paved the way for everyone from Otis Redding to Al Green to Aretha Franklin, all of whom cited Cooke as a major inspiration for their sound and style.

To honor the life and music of the King of Soul, we reached out to some of our favorite producers to pay homage to his legacy on our latest instrumental compilation. Ain’t That Good News: A Tribute to Sam Cooke partially shares the name of Cooke’s final studio album, which houses his most powerful and important song of all, “A Change Is Gonna Come”. I can personally remember that track hitting me like a ton—nay, 10 tons—of bricks when I first heard it as a teenager. While I could never understand the pain and tragedy he experienced, Cooke’s longing vocals and resonating words struck me to the core.

We’ve presented a slew of instrumental compilations in the past, including the autumnal Robot Soup last October, but Ain’t That Good News is our most poignant to date. It features the likes of Scoop DeVille and Two Fresh reinterpreting prisoner anthem “Chain Gang” while Phil A and Poptartpete deliver beautifully constructed pieces derived from interview clips. Elsewhere, ILLINGSWORTH and IMAKEMADBEATS provide piano-laced bursts of caffeine and Swarvy takes “Mean Old World” to another dimension.

we spend the night in a hotel room with three other people. the drugs still have a light hold on me and reality is vague and lucid. the air is soft, glowing and tingling and we share a cigarette out on the balcony sometime around four a.m and  somehow the blanket ends up hanging over the balcony rail and i think, as you and ana's sister make small talk, that so much is missed in these small hours. but i keep it to myself and light another cigarette as you two drift back inside and i stay surrounded by the cold morning air and watch the world slowly spin until the dying streetlight in the parking lot across the street begins to flicker and it proves to ensure my restless thoughts to stir and get the best of me.

back inside the conversations continue and i present myself as part of them, i remember the hazy moments of distraction and lack of self control when i would catch my eyes wandering back to you but i'd brush it off and try to settle the bitter shivers in my veins. and eventually the chemicals wear off and joey's coke connect doesn't come through so i end up next to you on a bed in a hotel room permeated with the sweet smell of marijuana and you say, with your eyes resting soft on mine, "tell me a secret,"



and eventually you fell asleep next to me and i watched as the sunlight came through the blinds and found it's way to your skin, warming lines in thin intervals down your body, and you don't know but in your sleep you whispered "where are you" and i slid my hand under yours and you turned towards me in the slightest way and kept your fingers interlocked with mine until the chemicals got the best of me and i went outside for another cigarette. 

something was troubling you in your sleep, and it may not be me you were whispering to but i was there and i was saw cause to comfort your soul and that is enough for me.
