Headman - No Surprises / Not About / Sometimes

Spontaneity unsettled her, she liked to know what her day had in store for her; her entire life come to think of it. She'd tried her hand at new experiences; leaving everything at the drop of a hat and taking off somewhere distant; donning a fresh haircut; trialling a different vocation or hobby - it didn't suit her though. Her preference was to have things mapped out for, that way there'd be no surprises. 

For over two decades Robi Insinna has been releasing music and helming Relish Recordings, his label indebted to off kilter post-punk, new wave and disco. Under his name, and his moniker Headman, he's crafted his own take on these sounds, largely underpinned by trademark bass lines and an analog rawness. These traits are all there on his new single, 'No Surprises', which is the first to be taken off his new LP. There's a nod to the sounds of 80's NYC through its machine funk aesthetic and raw synthesis, while on the flip there's a remix from Making Time and Optimo affiliates Zillas On Acid who steer the track down a dark chugging path.

This is the 2nd single taken from the upcoming Headman album. Including original vocal, dub version and 2 remixes by Exterminador.

The original instrumental was released in 2015. Robi Insinna aka Headman reworked and added vocals to this version called Not About. The dub has stripped down vocals and goes in to a more Detroit Techno dancefloor direction. Exterminador has done 2 remixes. Remix 1’s spherical and hypnotical melody evokes memories of Chris & Cosey. Remix 2 has a more distorted vibe but still keeps an ethereal retro atmosphere.

They called them outsiders; people that lived on the fringes of society and had no interest in traditional ways of living. People had their own opinions of the ways in which they chose to live their lives, not that it phased them in any way, they saw those living "regular" lives as the ones losing out. They thought of them as slaves to the system, doing what others told them. In contrast they thought of themselves as renegades - they carved out their own norms, and lived free of control.

Robi Insinna, better known as Headman, has been slowly teasing out music that will appear on his upcoming album, penned for release on his own Relish Recordings. 'Not About' is the second single to be released - a track that was originally shared as an instrumental all the way back in 2015. This brand new iteration, under its new name, features reworked and additional vocals from Robi, and in true Headman style comes complete with a dub version that veers into Detroit techno. To round off the package, he's invited Italian born producer Mario Resta, who moonlights as Exterminador, to create two special remixes.

Premiering releases of established labels is definitely a great responsibility. A challenge that, of course, we feel an enormous pleasure in accomplishing. We have a confession, though: Every time we are requested to review a track of the very first release of a new imprint, we feel something else, a different kind of bond as if we were going to be part of the history of the new project forever. With the kick-off of Spazio Label, things would not be different: We feel truly honoured for having the privilege of reviewing a piece of the Russian platform’s debut release. And what a debut!

Featuring 12-made-with-love cuts, soon available in K-7 and digital formats, the volume one of the VA “Spazio Invasore” showcases the rich sonority of the project by bringing together friends & resident DJs and their respective contributions: Nu Disco, New Beat, Indie Dance, Proto House, Neo Italo, and Modern Disco were brought the party.

After years of exploring fictional dystopian futures in sound Ubre Blanca, like everyone else, found themselves living through a real life dystopian nightmare during the COVID pandemic. The ensuing chaos and forced hiatus from playing live changed their way of working and the direction of the new music.
Drawing on old and new influences ranging from the pioneers of '70s synth music to the contemporary wave of Dark Disco and Neo-Italo via '90s rave, House and Trance, the resulting album, 'Rhizome' is an unabashed celebration of being back on the dance floor and a way of reaching out and reconnecting with other artists and DJs around the world.
From 'Narcopolis', a tribute to old-school House with an Italo twist and 'Pacific Palisades' recalling the band's 'Terminal Island' EP and '80s FM euphoria to the three part 'Nocturne' suite, which evolves from the band's long-time John Carpenter influenced sound through a space rock slide guitar solo into Synthwave territory, this album sees Ubre Blanca exploring the roots of the band's sound and influences and branching out in new directions. Released digital and on tape on young Archaic Future Sounds.

Rude Audio (aka Mark Ratcliff) and Dan Wainwright, from South London and North Wales respectively, have paired their creative energies to create Psychedelic Science, an eight track dub excursion with its sights set on the feet and the head and on the home and the club.
Dan and Mark have backgrounds in electronic dance music which has in the past pricked the ears, radio shows and playlists of the likes of Don Letts, Justin Robertson and the much missed Andrew Weatherall.
They are joined on their trip by friends such as the legendary driver of Ken Kesey’s Magic Bus, counter – culture legend Ken Babbs, who at the age of 84 provides a showstopping vocal for a ten minute, psychedelic dub cover of Bowie’s ‘Heroes’.
Elsewhere Dan and Mark find the dub spirit and take it to places new: the sweet bassline led, sci fi splendour of Fire On The Mountain; El Qasr’s off kilter dynamics and bottom end rumble; Talking To The Sun’s heliocentric spaced out sounds, with the spirit of Lord Sabre finding its way in.
There’s no escaping the other influences at work here- mycological and herbal as well as musical. At the end, the pair hit the psychedelic dub motherlode with an eighteen-minute exploration of space and sound in the shape of the epic, chilled, progressive Patience Dub (A Prog Odyssey) which is the sum of the sounds and experiences of Rude Audio and Dan Wainwright, all percolating in one expansive trip.

Robi Insinna is a Producer, DJ, Visual Artist and INDUSTRIA and RELISH owner.

Back in 2001 he founded the seminal Relish label in direct response to a then-dominant sound in club music. Its catalogue is as vast as it is varied and foreshadowing the music he'd go on to make himself under Headman/Manhead. Some highlights are IT ROUGH, Birth School Work Death, in the early years for the newer period tracks such as Be Loved, Dechainee. He also was busy remixing the likes of Roxy Music, The Gossip, Franz Ferdinand, The Units, Unknown Cases, Gina X and many more.
Relish has also been busy releasing international talents and remixes such as Daniel Avery, Red Axes, Borusiade, Manfredas.


Fast forward to 2018 he's on the move again launching new Project label, Industria with - not quite an album, not quite an EP - Hard Work. The debut was released under Robi's own name.
Industria will be focused more on vinyl releases, but not solely vinyl. The project will encompass all areas of Robi's work and ties together elements of his art and visual design projects and products.
