A longstanding leader in contemporary electronic music, composer and multi-instrumentalist, Steve Roach (born 1955 in La Mesa, California) drew on the beauty and power of the earth's landscapes to create lush, meditative soundscapes influential on the emergence of ambient. Inspired by the music of Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, and Vangelis and by the Peter Weir film The Last Wave, Roach journeyed to the Australian outback, with field recordings of aboriginal life inspiring his acknowledged masterpiece, the double-album Dreamtime Return. 

After relocating to the desert outskirts of Tucson, Arizona, Roach established his own recording studio, Timeroom, and in the years to follow grew increasingly prolific, creating both as a solo artist and in tandem with artists including Robert Rich, Michael Stearns, - in all, close to two dozen major works in the 1990s alone, all of them located at different points on the space-time continuum separating modern technology and primitive music.

Winter Solstice 2021 By Barefoot

So only a few more days left to this year, but, more importantly, a few more days before I announce my Best of 2021 lists, but before we wave another year farewell, I've got something very special to share with you. In fact, this is a celebration of two years, to be more precise - two years of releases from the amazing LAAPS imprint. The label was created by Mathias Van Eecloo as a permanent sonic and visual continuity, with each release starting with the end of the previous one. And now, two years, four seasons, and 16 releases later, we've got this gorgeous 60-minute mix showcasing each one... turning into what I may bluntly proclaim to be an exclusive compilation just for Headphone Commute! This is a fantastic trip through music, layered with not only skillful selection, but Funcken’s expert touch of mixology, blended with a few effects to smooth out your ride. I could honestly go on and on about it, but, as with most cases for these things, the music speaks louder.

As with all of my ‘Reflection’ year-end mixes, I start with a long list of albums I have enjoyed over the year. Often hundreds. Through the process of putting a mix together that flows well, the songs are whittled down and selected from each album. This means many of my favorite tracks are often omitted in the process (even favorite tracks from a favorite album). But as I say every year, this isn’t a definitive ‘best-of’ list, but an organic selection of some of my favorite music from the year in a listenable format - it’s the most enjoyable way for me to boil down music I’ve loved from the year using these self-imposed restrictions. Use the mix to jump off and explore more from each artist and album.
