Nerves / Familiarity is the first official start to Elskavon’s next album era, and it’s a representation not only of composer Chris Bartels’ sound over the years, but also a metaphorical look inside his mind. That is, one of contrast.

With Elskavon’s sound, there’s always been a contrast, and marriage, of grandeur and intimacy. Nerves / Familiarity is no exception.

While it starts out quiet, the listener can immediately feel the enormity of Nerves. The sustained sound is that of Bartels slowly drawing a string of yarn across his old spinet piano’s strings. Only a minute and half in, the sound is thick and full, layered with falsetto vocals fed through modular synthesizers. It hasn’t taken long to be engulfed in the grandeur. 

However, as quickly as it arrives, there’s a departure. An intimate and rhythmic cassette texture, signaled by a slow tonic modulation, foreshadows a look at the second track - the contrast.

Familiarity begins with a bed of introspective notes and textures - mostly that of high piano notes and chopped up Rhodes improvisations. There’s a certain closeness with this sound, and a contrast to the large reverb-soaked fabric that leads Nerves. Then halfway through the song, there is a short build - an encore, if you will, to the grandeur of the first track.

Much like these songs and past Elskavon albums, there is a journey of contrasts with every creative turn for Bartels, finding himself deep in a whirlwind of excitement and fear, anticipation and anxiety, inspiration and frustration. And while being fully aware of the negative sides of that whirlwind, there’s an indescribable beauty and hope in the choice to keep writing, to keep moving. And to not simply run from the negatives, but to allow them to inspire, to motivate.

A creative journey should never be easy or comfortable. If it is, the other side will most certainly be lacking in the beauty and depth it so desires.

With this next album era, Bartels is choosing to embrace the contrast.

"This was the first time I created a playlist, and it was a beautiful experience, very similar to that of composing. Suddenly I had all the music of the world to choose from and come to only one hour of music. I selected composers that inspire me and bring me joy and introspection. Legendary musicians such as Terry Riley and Dino Saluzzi, and close teachers and friends such as Cesar Lerner and Laura Masotto. Music from Argentina, where I was born and raised, music with African and Indian background, places where I learned a different way of inhabiting music, and music from Spain which is my home today. "This mix contains a collection of pieces by artists from all over the world, from my hometown Australia to Mongolia to Iceland. I wanted to acknowledge pioneers like Sigur Ros and Nils Frahm in the ambient/modern classical world that have influenced me in the past as well as emerging acts like Alistair Sung and BPMoore that inspire me today. As a composer for film/TV/advertising, I also wanted to share artists I've discovered through movies and TV such as Nicholas Britell, Colin Stetson, Roomful of Teeth. Hearing Roomful of Teeth live at St Giles Church (Barbican) in 2018 was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. I even discovered the track by Vessel through the movie trailer for the Korean film, The Handmaiden. Thanks for inviting me to create this mix."

Drexler - Contemplative Classical Guest Mix

Today I would like to introduce you to Reza Safinia with this exclusive premiere of a piece titled “Within” from his upcoming, self-released Yin album. He’s got a fascinating background, with names such as Destiny’s Child, Britney Spears, Akala and even Dr Dre appearing on his curriculum vitae. But this is not a pop record – I wouldn’t feature that on Headphone Commute, right? Rather, the album collects compositions influenced by romantic classical music (Satie and Debussy are quoted) with a touch of cinematic electronica, which Safinia incorporated from his extensive background in film music (he’s scored a few Hollywood productions, such as The Trust and Mercy). There is an influence of the spiritual and eastern philosophies on the record (Safinia is a yoga teacher and a practising Daoist), and its reflection can be glimpsed in the album title itself. Of course, there is a second half, appropriately named Yang, which will be published later in the year, but for now, we have eleven gentle, peaceful, slightly melancholic and overwhelmingly beautiful tracks, with the album’s opener featured here today.
