After WW3 500 Million abled bodied men and women survived, most of them hid in underground shelters for decades while the atomic dust settles wiping out literally every living thing. Another decade in the open, 400 Million of them died some in few weeks and the others took half a decade. the remaining 100 Million people around the world created their own hubs of community that have built shelters and form of tribes.  The war continued without any use of any nuclear weapons, just with the skin of their teeth, the 100 Million men and women dwindled down to 5 Million, 800 sick malnourished women and 4.2 Million physically fit men. The women stopped giving birth from a defect of the nuclear blast. the women can't toil the fields, the women can't wrestle a cow, the women can't hunt for food alone in the dark, the women even the smartest of them in 2025 when WW3 took off have no power without their computers and their logistical plans, the women in 2050 have become less useful for survival post-apocalypse, the women have become a baggage to men. And in some tribes in Africa, South and North America, women and children have become food. The remaining humans of 5 Million fight for the livable space left and not scorched by the final atomic blast that targeted key cities. Pelo Voan leads a small group of young men, in what was formerly known as 'The European Territories' as they look for other remaining survivors using makeshift machineries and weapons they find along the way, to navigate the new and brutally violent world.

First single from Josh Varnedore's upcoming album "the thunder might save us" on Hammock Music label (August 23, 2024).

Delving into cavernous darkness and emerging with glimmering light, Josh Varnedore’s ambient soundscapes reverberate with an ancient, earthen warmth. Reverent and immersed in the natural world, the Ohio-based multimedia artist finds inspiration and more in the hills of Ohio and Arkansas, where he prospects for crystals and natural objects of wood, and bone to incorporate into his music and art. As he works with these elemental and organic materials–Varnedore bows his guitar using a rosined stone core sample from the Union Carbide mine in Arkansas that he estimates to be over one hundred million years old–Varnedore extracts the sounds of rock, soil and once-living matter, giving voice to the story of our slow burning journey with the earth.

Central to Varnedore’s art is the relationship between enduring objects and ephemeral life, a subject he explores through improvised works of fingerpicked and bowed guitar, field recordings, and a diverse array of sounds created with a vintage sampler. In a collaborative creation with nature, Arkansan quartz will serve as a guitar slide, and a deer jaw found in the woods near his home is another earthen bow that he uses to produce the music he molds like clay. A palpable sense of place imbues Varnedore’s music, which he records in an old schoolhouse, as his songs are touched by the history of rural Ohio and the lives of those who have passed through the 19th century schoolhouse’s doors.

As he traverses varied sonic terrain, Varnedore taps into voids to establish an immense gravity while threading delicate, weightless patterns from the natural world into shifting webs of harmonized melodies. The resulting songs are both glacial and luminous, golden-hued hums of an unspoken language that pulse and echo and decay and renew. His forthcoming debut project for the renowned Nashville-based ambient record label Hammock Music will be released August 2024.

Today, I am happy to share with you a new piece of music that will serve as the opening to the upcoming mini-album that I will self-release later this summer. To be honest, with all these written words for many years, talking about all this music by many of my favourite composers, I'm actually pretty shit at self-promoting myself. This is why I usually leave this "job" to the many wonderful labels to spread the word. And then I amplify and filter. "Saturated Signals" is a continuation of my sonic journey initially explored on Sacred Tonalities, which was put out on the amazing Past Inside The Present in February of 2023. Initially, it was conceived as a bonus or a follow-up track until it evolved on its own, as music usually does. I then invited a few of my dear friends to rework the piece and add their special touch to the heavily layered synthesized and organic textures which I provided as a foundation for this piece. Each distinct interpretation offers a perfect tint of the individual composer's aesthetic to create a collective whole that you can experience as a unified journey in half an hour's time, connected by an interweaving theme. I will share Saturated Reworks with the world in just a couple of weeks, followed by the full mini-album, but first, here's the single.

I may not trust the intarwebs, but I will surely trust my label. When it comes to discovering new music (to pop me out of my echo chamber and insistent feedback loop), it’s easy to get lost among the new releases. There’s just too much of everything, and it’s only getting harder to discern. Anyone can share their latest content. And anyone can upload with a click. There’s a reason for that. The companies that host it all have made it easy for a reason: to monetize your music. To turn your content into cash. On the flip side, the labels take their time. They are, in turn, investing in the artist. So when you buy into the label, you buy into their world. Past Inside The Present has been curating my journey since 2018, and I have learned to trust Zach’s choice in music. So when he backs North Carolina-based vocalist Angela Winter for her slightly avant-garde solo debut release for the label, I’m all ears. I write “solo” because in 2024, we’ve already heard her voice on a collaboration with the label boss himself, titled Mid Sky. Together, the duo navigated “a realm between the terrestrial and cosmic with organic drones and ethereal vocals“. In August, Angela returns with a full-length titled Forbidden Questions In Space, centered around ambient and drone improvisations, and of course, her voice, for a koan-inspired drift into the endless cosmos. If you’ve been following Headphone Commute, you know that I tend to focus on mostly instrumental music, often with a darker tint of sonic experimentation. Today, I select one of those pieces from her upcoming album to give you a taste.

TRACK PREMIERE : Angela Winter - Saturn, lightly

There are a few collaborations that work really well. And, when something works well, why not double down? Two years ago [I almost said last November], Markus Guentner and Joachim Spieth came together for a full-length release on Spieth's own Affin imprint. This was more than just their initial conversation, which appeared on Kompakt's Pop Ambient's 2022 installment. Overlay was full of lush texture and ambience, which gently tickled the sensitive nerve endings in my ear canal, leaving my brain to decipher the signals into analgesic pleasantries. This year, the duo returns with a follow-up full-length release, delving deeper into atmospheric soundscapes, punctuating them with a dub-inspired heart-pounding beat. Fans of hypnotic, kaleidoscopic, and sonically rich environments will surely want to lose themselves in the caverns of this all-encompassing sound. If you are a fan [as much as I am] of their solo works, you will find that here, together, the multiplier is higher. They're truly at the top of their art here, so let's put on a heavy ADS for a fully submersible voyage. A subwoofer is recommended.

Here’s an exclusive sneak peek at what’s been happening over at Headphone Community during October. If you missed it, we’ve been spending the entire month with Dennis Huddleston (aka 36) talking about his music, production techniques, and even art design. And of course, he shared plenty of music. There were Bandcamp codes for his past releases (some are still available for you to grab, if you join!), previously unreleased tracks, alternative mixes, and, yes, even some premieres, like this beautiful piece from the upcoming album titled A Warm Static Sphere, released via Quiet Details on November 12th. Huddleston has been releasing music for over 15 years on influential labels such as A Strangely Isolated Place, Past Inside the Present, and his own 3six Recordings. He is without a doubt “a master of wide-eyed cinematic soundscapes and beautifully crafted worlds that are as harmonically rich as they are polychromatically abstract.” It’s a pleasure to see (and hear) him being selected as the next monumental entry in Quiet Details’ impressive catalog.

"A Warm Static Sphere is about finding peace through isolation. It’s a record doused in gentle hum/static, which, when played quietly through headphones, acts like a warm, enveloping sphere around the head. It’s like a private isolation zone between the listener and the outside world, which feels warm and safe inside. Following his debut Dolere (2024) and a collaboration with Joachim Spieth and Markus Guentner on Arcadia (2025), zakè returns to Joachim's Affin imprint with an intensely captivating work that explores the resonance of low frequencies and subsonic vibrations. There are only three pieces on this 55-minute release (the first track runs for over 28 minutes!), and you get to preview one of them before the album is out. This is music shaped for your deep, immersive, and glacial listening sessions. Good headphones and a subwoofer (yes, at the same time) are recommended. Perfect for my slowly-waking, frazzled mind this morning!

"Low Harmonics builds upon the reflective world first introduced by Zach on Dolere, which explored how time stretches during periods of sorrow and how sound can create a brief shelter from that weight. The predecessor fluctuated between ache and relief, and now its follow-up dives further into the inward, existential space beneath those emotions. Here, the use of deep and subterranean tones feels both intimate and vast, pulling you deeper into the lower spectrum of sound, shaped by heavy bass ebbs, low-frequency flow, and slow-moving drift. HEADPHONE COMMUNITY EXCLUSIVE: zakè - Low Harmonics, Part 3

You don’t have to read the press release for Rafael Anton Irisarri‘s latest opus, Points of Inaccessibility, to know all of its conveyed emotion. It’s already all there. That is the power of music when it’s delivered through the heart and mind by an amazing artist. Sure, there is an interesting background behind this work [and one which you can read on Bandcamp anyway], but for me, it doesn’t matter. When I listened to this album for the first time, I was immediately overwhelmed with its immersive poignant arc, and then I listened to it again, and again, and again… until the four pieces became not just the sounds for the story to be discovered later through these words, but they became the sounds for the story of my own, the one where words are not enough, the one that only speaks in music. This music touches something deeply personal, and then these words come out in abstract. But when you read them, you will know at least one thing: they have been written by a human. They have been triggered by a human. And when two humans speak without words, there is a true and genuine connection. One, which we can’t replace with a digital domain. And as we sink a little deeper every day into a world of artificial emotion, remember that you can return to music. Remember that this music is the key.


Points of Inaccessibility came from thinking about how disconnection feels in an age obsessed with connection. We are constantly online, constantly visible, yet we drift further apart. The real distance isn’t geographic anymore, it’s emotional. We mistake connectivity for community. The more we share, the less we seem to feel. This album is about that strange loneliness that hides inside constant communication, a loneliness that hums quietly beneath the surface of everything. The record isn’t nostalgic. It’s about the way the present is haunted by all the futures that never arrived. We live inside systems that promise connection but deliver repetition. Everything loops, nothing resolves.

[Premiere] Brecc - Swarm (BLADES on Scuderia)

Bleach Cult is the musical nom de plume of Vytis Puronas, singer-songwriter and film sound designer, formerly one half of lo-fi synth pop outfit Soy Farm. His music is deeply textural and direct, with a genre-bending approach that explores post-punk aesthetics, minimal wave soundscapes and intriguing hooks with a sweet retro vibe.

Summertime Whiteout is a debut Bleach Cult album - the quirky ambient pop record that fantasizes about 1960s surf culture and romanticizes the neverending dilemmas of teen life. It is all about raw imperfections and beautiful spontaneity, captured live on a modular synthesizer, often relying on single takes and instinctive executions of tracks that leave little to no room for extensive tweaking and post-processing. Recorded in the living room at night it shies away from sophistication and complexity instead employing rough, rock and roll inspired ideas. Raw drifting analog sequences, pulsating textures and polychromatic vocals. No guitars or drum machines, however.
