Heaps Decent is proud to announce the release of ‘Soulfood’, the debut EP from rising talent, Bankstown-based artist Ravin (pronounced ‘Rah-vin’). The lead single from his hotly anticipated EP, ‘Pure Mind’, features the unmistakable vocals of lyrical genius Tkay Maidza, taking this jazzy joint to a new level of emotion. ‘Life Don’t Shine’ features an accompanying video from Sydney-based visual artist Ego and showcases Ravin’s powerful lyrics and technical prowess married with a perfect balance of psychedelic surroundings to complete the experience that is ‘Soulfood’. It’s hard to go past the strength of Adam Bozzetto’s production across this whole release; his illustrious talents are more than evident throughout this collaboration.

With its laidback flow and Dilla-esque productions, the EP draws comparisons to 90’s rap heavyweights such as Tupac, Nas, Ghostface Killah and A Tribe Called Quest. Each track sets about its own intricate story that touches on both Ravin’s south-west Sydney upbringing and Australian/Samoan heritage. Tapping into the astuteness of this young artist, a lyrical depth is manifested in every phrase.

The result of many long sessions at our Home Base workshops, ‘Soulfood’ is a stellar debut that shows incredible talent and wisdom beyond his 18 years, and we see huge things on the horizon for this young artist.

Aged 21, charismatic Australian-born father of 1, Rassel Cool, is a founding member of south-west Sydney's unstoppable rap crew T.Era. Having commenced his music career at the age of 15, Rassel Cool went on to promote his music amongst classmates and teachers. After moving back and forth between Auckland and Sydney, he decided to settle in Sydney and began attending our weekly Heaps Decent workshops in Redfern. With the assistance of our music tutors he has undoubtedly forged his own sound and was inspired to produce a strong body of work for his debut EP.

Featuring the magnificent production of Heaps Decent's Adam Bozzetto and Hugh O'Brien, his "2:35am" EP is a reflective piece; filled with atmosphere and substance, these infectious three tracks will have you reaching for the repeat button.

This project was partially funded by the Music Board of the Australia Council for The Arts and sees Heaps Decent facilitators carry out music production workshops at a school within a Juvenile Justice Centre in Wagga Wagga. This program seeks to provide the young people within these centres with a voice, motivation and heightened self-esteem by engaging with their experiences through music.

The Juvenile Justice program focuses on songwriting, recording and music production. There has been a marked increases in the young people’s engagement and confidence over the course of the project. Through our relationship with Fuzzy as well as other industry professionals we are able to bring high caliber artists both Australian and International to these workshops and have found that this is inspirational and exciting for both the young people as well as the musicians with a number of them returning for multiple workshops as well as spreading the word about Heaps Decent to their colleagues.

Born in Sydney of Turkish heritage, Ata's intricate songs explore stories surrounding his life experiences as a first generation Australian. With a unique flow and sophisticated repertoire, Ata is set to make waves in the Sydney independent rap scene.
