Heaps Decent is proud to announce the release of ‘Soulfood’, the debut EP from rising talent, Bankstown-based artist Ravin (pronounced ‘Rah-vin’). The lead single from his hotly anticipated EP, ‘Pure Mind’, features the unmistakable vocals of lyrical genius Tkay Maidza, taking this jazzy joint to a new level of emotion. ‘Life Don’t Shine’ features an accompanying video from Sydney-based visual artist Ego and showcases Ravin’s powerful lyrics and technical prowess married with a perfect balance of psychedelic surroundings to complete the experience that is ‘Soulfood’. It’s hard to go past the strength of Adam Bozzetto’s production across this whole release; his illustrious talents are more than evident throughout this collaboration.

With its laidback flow and Dilla-esque productions, the EP draws comparisons to 90’s rap heavyweights such as Tupac, Nas, Ghostface Killah and A Tribe Called Quest. Each track sets about its own intricate story that touches on both Ravin’s south-west Sydney upbringing and Australian/Samoan heritage. Tapping into the astuteness of this young artist, a lyrical depth is manifested in every phrase.

The result of many long sessions at our Home Base workshops, ‘Soulfood’ is a stellar debut that shows incredible talent and wisdom beyond his 18 years, and we see huge things on the horizon for this young artist.

Here at our HQ, Sampology has unequivocally knocked our socks off. Pooling together talent from Brisbane’s soulful electronic sphere, his upcoming Natural Selections EP is a collaborative effort showcasing nothing short of mastery. Noah Slee, Laneous and renowned composer Gordon Hamilton all lay their grace on the EP, along with family members — making each track an individual fruit, and the whole release a true labour of love.

Title track “Natural Selections” is a certified slammer. Organic afro-percussive wizardry made up of vividly live instrumentation makes the Gilles Peterson selection jump out. Lushly layered electronic nuances and exotic throwbacks all add, to make this an unforgettable treat for the senses.
