From Cygnus Music: Skull & Bones kicks us off, with its funky, lilting intro, which drops into some rolling Eastern effects. Bass is never far away, underpinning MC Kwality's deep, resonating rhymes. Following a string of successful label releases in a short period of time, DLR is ready to unleash his debut solo album on Dispatch Recordings, entitled ‘Seeing Sounds’.

Having previously collaborated with Octane on the ‘Method In The Madness’ album, DLR has quickly established his own signature sound; an instantly recognizable groove mischievously poking through the mix, terrorizing dancefloors in a truly unique way.

As an album concept, ‘Seeing Sounds’ is DLR’s exploration into sound design and how the manipulation of organic elements and subtle soundscapes can create imagery within the music; to set the scene and immerse the listener up to a cinematic level.

Commencing this quest from abstract beginnings, DLR investigates over a selection of different formats and styles, ranging from the tantalizing neck snapper “Charlie Brown” to the sinister breakbeat nonchalance of “I Found Out”.

Inviting external influences to the fold; specially selected guests join the project to explore further, including Total Science, creating the cataclysmic “Control The Sound”, Hydro, the ambient chords and emotive vocal sample in ‘Empyreal” and partner in crime Break, resulting in the mighty, yet constrained “Human Error”.

Since Resident Advisor’s initial announcement, the album has garnered support from all corners, including Noisia, Friction (numerous Radio 1 plays), Goldie, Calyx & Teebee and The Upbeats, with Mixmag selecting it as their February ‘Album of the Month’. The early support from Friction on his BBC Radio 1 show also led to a special invite where DLR dropped an album mix in for live broadcast on the 13th of January.

With an innate understanding of the technology available and a shrewd willingness to exploit it, ‘Seeing Sounds’ is the culmination of DLR’s very best work to date.

As we continue our mission of dancefloor exploration into the colder days ahead, we reanimate one of our favorite revenants from the bottomless underworld to warm us back up.

An immortal product of the robust Detroit scene, Joel Dunn now serves as a commander in our growing Satellite Trax fleet. Last year's "Michigan & Rosa EP" [STRX008] under his dubstep-centric alias OktoRed cracked our foundation with blistering bass weight. This time, he returns to our sublabel by way of his Marshall Applewhite project, cunningly named after the deranged leader of Heaven's Gate.

Known for cultivating bass workouts that gravitate towards modern electro, Marshall Applewhite is back with a fresh tracklist of cult classics. "We Dress For Dinner EP" is a hate letter to the eerie autumn breeze felt after supper, capturing the essence of our shapeshifter's many stylistic forms. For his slower paced, hypnosis-inducing tracks, he has coined the term "sludge" as a niche descriptor and potential subgenre to build upon. This can be heard in the opener "Acid Beans," a midtempo meltdown and theme song of experiencing poison damage. The EP looks into the future with "Ravioli Raid," stepping on the tempo throttle with its clear ghettotech influence and ode to pasta. "Old Risotto Lung Charlie" keeps the octane flowing through cleverly syncopated yet unforgiving bassline intended to devour dimly lit dancefloors. The acidic bassline in "Meat Droplets" is an insignia of Detroit dwellers, assembled around an inimitable groove reminiscent of early techno mornings. "Sunday Dishes" is a suitable pick-me-up for weekend warriors in the form of smooth, tasteful jungle with no aftertaste.

As a newfound tradition and homage to last year's "Vengabus" on STRX008, Marshall Applewhite closes with another Bandcamp-exclusive track. "Mr. Vain Cover" flips Culture Beat's 90s anthem into a DJ tool drenched in his "sludge" aesthetic. What he hilariously described as "MTV techno" is willfully drained into a garbage disposal for our morbid curiosity.

There are few entities that better represent our personal slice of the Motor City's vibrant underground than Marshall Applewhite. His latest offering is yet another testament to the urban grit and grueling bass that are integral components of our sonic DNA. Task Horizon make a comeback on Evolution Chamber with the next part of their ‘Hack the Planet’ EP series; already solidifying fan’s expectations with ‘Disintegrate’, the second edition of its sequence is just as explosive on impact. ‘Mekaneck’ continues the high-arching trend which was set up through ‘Disintegrate’ whilst simultaneously reaffirming why they’re seen as some of the most technically adept producers within the contemporary drum & bass scene.

Not only does ‘Mekaneck’ also represent Task Horizon’s second record to drop on the newly relaunched Evolution Chamber, alongside Anglo Russian production duo Magnetude, and Receptor, it brings forward the theme which each track on the label dives into. Evolution Chamber has committed itself to creating stories out of its catalogue and this time ‘Mekaneck’ centres itself around the hero whose name many sci-fi fans will recognise.

Telling the tale of ‘Mekaneck’ with splitting, chaotic drum sequences, which are perfectly refined yet still shattering with their power, its jaunty riffs add the stamp which makes Task Horizon’s music so noticeable on the dancefloor. Punctuated by percussive slaps and empowered, frenzied spikes of synthesis, you’re pulled into the chaos even through its first breakdown. ‘Mekaneck’ is urgent, bewildered and takes you through the heroes agonised journey. Task Horizon set you up to be moved into the world of the Evolution Chamber, this time as ‘Mekaneck’ battles for his place in its universe.

Without further ado, prepare for another segment of Task Horizon’s ‘Hack the Planet’ EP to drop very soon. After all, there’s yet more parts of their tale to be unveiled.
