If you've heard it, you're more dead than alive

Art music has been governed by the Church, the Court, and now by the States. I’m not sure to what extent cultured composers have been "free." What is clear is that the Church, with all its flaws, respected the will of creators more. Starting in the Baroque period, when the Courts and the Market began to "influence," music degraded to such unacceptable levels as happened in Spain and France—except in Germany and Italy. There isn’t a single Spanish Baroque work worth mentioning, despite coming from a tradition of exceptional Renaissance composers. And as for French music, I won’t even go there because I have friends who respect it, but aside from Lully’s March, the rest seems like an aberration to me from every point of view.

I am currently composing music that, due to one inquisition or another, never had a place in its time. Plus, my Latin professor used to call me a rebel, which I am. My body only tolerates the opinions of my Masters and God; organizational impositions don’t sit well with me.

If you’ve detected certain inconsistencies, as is logical, and they’ve bothered you, I dedicate this work to you. With 99% certainty, you’re an atheist and can’t create anything—maybe you can play an instrument at most.

Early Baroque Without Inquisition

Sor Beatrice ingresó al convento con fervor y esperanza, buscando paz eterna. Pero, con los años, su fe comenzó a desmoronarse. La oscuridad medieval, preludio del Renacimiento, eclipsaba la espiritualidad que había anhelado. Las paredes del convento, antes refugio, ahora le resultaban asfixiantes. Un día, incapaz de soportar más su duda, decidió partir. Emprendió un viaje sin rumbo, llevando solo un crucifijo como recordatorio de su pasado.

Caminó durante meses, atravesando montañas, valles y ríos, hasta llegar a las remotas montañas de Georgia. Allí escuchó algo que la detuvo: una música completamente nueva para ella. Era un coro polifónico, con voces entrelazadas en armonías complejas y disonancias inesperadas. Al principio, Sor Beatrice no entendió nada; aquella música desafiaba las reglas que conocía. Sin embargo, algo en ella la atrajo irresistiblemente. Se acercó al grupo y descubrió que eran hombres y mujeres, campesinos y pastores, que cantaban como parte de su vida cotidiana. No había solemnidad ni ritual, solo una expresión pura de comunidad y fe.

Aunque ya no vestía el hábito, Sor Beatrice se integró al coro. Aprendió sus melodías, ritmos y disonancias, que pronto sanaron su alma herida. En ese lugar conoció a Ana, una mujer viuda que se convirtió en su amiga cercana. Ana también había encontrado consuelo en la música. Juntas descubrieron que aquellas canciones no eran solo sonidos bellos, sino puentes hacia lo divino.

Una noche, mientras observaban las estrellas desde una montaña, Sor Beatrice tuvo una revelación: si esa música podía transformarla, tal vez podría hacer lo mismo por otros. Propuso a Ana un plan audaz: recorrer el mundo para aprender otras formas de música y llevarlas de vuelta al convento. Ana aceptó, y juntas partieron hacia Lituania, donde descubrieron cánticos lituanos fascinantes. Estos les enseñaron nuevas formas de entender la armonía y el contrapunto.

Después de meses de viaje, regresaron al convento italiano. La madre superiora, sorprendida pero cautelosa, permitió que enseñaran lo aprendido, siempre evitando "en la medida de lo posible" las disonancias que tanto perturbaban su sentido del qué dirán. Así, Sor Beatrice y Ana instruyeron a las monjas en los cánticos georgianos y lituanos, adaptándolos al estilo conservador del convento. Nació entonces una innovación única: un contrapunto sencillo pero emocional, que ganó complejidad con el tiempo.

Pronto enfrentaron un problema: las composiciones requerían voces masculinas para alcanzar su pleno potencial. Decidieron contactar a unos curas de una parroquia cercana. A través de un pacto secreto, estos hombres llegaban al convento por un pasadizo oculto para cantar junto a las monjas. Juntos experimentaron con nuevas formas de polifonía, mezclando lo antiguo y lo moderno, lo sagrado y lo humano.

Con el tiempo, esta colaboración dio lugar a una obra monumental: un ciclo de cánticos que fusionaba música gregoriana, tradiciones georgianas y lituanas, y toques de disonancia controlada. Aquella música revitalizó la fe de las monjas y comenzó a difundirse más allá del convento. Viajeros y peregrinos quedaban profundamente conmovidos, afirmando que las melodías despertaban algo dormido en sus corazones.

Así, lo que comenzó como un acto personal de Sor Beatrice se convirtió en un catalizador para el renacimiento espiritual y artístico de toda una región. La obra creada en aquel convento marcó el inicio de una nueva era, donde fe y creatividad caminaban juntas. Y aunque nadie fuera del convento supo quién inspiró aquella revolución musical, Dios guardó en Su memoria la historia de aquellas monjas cuya búsqueda incansable cambió el curso de la historia.
