Low Steppa needs little introduction. Since the early years of this millennium he’s been producing some of the finest bass music around under various guises, whilst touring the globe and rocking some of the world’s best parties – from EDC in Los Angeles to Womb in Tokyo.

His own imprint Simma Black Records is going from strength to strength, with Simma Black releases becoming a staple in many a DJs crate, and with his own Simma parties packing clubbers in.

As well as his solo productions, through several aliases and collab projects like Twocker, Rudi Stakker, Bass Weazal, Dreadstemz, Low Steppa, Punk Rolla, Will Bailey, Low Steppa remains very much at the forefront of the bass music scene, with his productions gaining support from some of the industry’s biggest names including Fake Blood, Martin Ikin, Grant Nelson, Shadow Child and Kry Wolf. On top of which, recent radio support has come from the likes of Toddla T, Zane Lowe, Kissy Sellout and the Wideboys.
With a constant flow of releases and remixes coming, as well as a solid calendar of touring, Low Steppa will be stepping things up yet another level…

As the world hits a collective ‘sleep’ button to help slow the spread of the virus, it seems that people are hungrier than ever for new sounds to lift their spirits.  Social media is awash with livestreams and DJ’s, producers and musicians are coming up with a myriad of new ways to keep us entertained during the lockdown.  For us here at Freerange, we’re thankful to be safe and finding solace and pouring our focus into the label, keeping up momentum and continuing to bring you some amazing music.

 

Simon Hinter may be a new name to many having had just a handful of releases over the past ten years, but we like nothing more than playing a small part in bringing an artist to a wider audience and we feel that Simon Hinter deserves your attention.  On his Freerange debut entitled ‘Tired Up’ he delivers four brilliant originals which show diversity and skill in putting together fresh jams to work the dancefloor.

 

‘Tired Up’ gives us a sleazy, low-slung filtered groover which works up a looping guitar riff, throbbing sub bass and driving disco drums.  Minimal, yet primed and ready to draw you onto the floor, it’s familiar spoken word sample making for an explicit and compelling hook.  ‘Heaven & Hell’ goes in a deeper direction, going heavy on emotive chords, Moog line and fat claps whilst ‘Lifestreams’ is a classic MPC jam, cutting up some bass and stabs riff and re-sequencing into a high-energy, rolling workout.   Closing out the EP things wind down with ‘Looking Back’, a hazy, warm and sundrenched mood which sounds like something you that might come out of a head to head live-jam between Nightmares On Wax and Session Victim.

3 years have past since the release of the Fortunea Cookies Vol. 2 ep. Now, the Viennese label is resurrecting their various artists collection with a third entry.
 
The A-side begins with a smooth deep house piece by LeSale. Dreamy strings and sparkling pads chime together with a thriving funky bassline. A beautiful opener for estival sunset moments.
 
Peletronic and Klaus Benedek team up together on A2 with some ‚Analogue Kinda Funk‘. Finished during the lockdown while sending the project back and forth over the web, this track gives you an eerie and compelling feeling of the Zeitgeist we are living in right now. Dark reverberant percs, a crunchy guitar and a stunning drum beat will turn your flat into a club for sure.
 
The B-side features a new member on the fortunea roster. Dzc. is a young and talented dj and producer and this is her first production that is coming out. It’s called ‚The Truth‘ and is a well made peaktime track and a homage of early to late 90s house, techno and trance music.
 
Lukas Poellauer finishes this record. But not alone! He brought Schreder with him and together they make a ‚Midnight Ride‘ through a melancholic, acid-fulfilled desert.

Our next release, the ‘Exposures EP’ by Teleseen, fits perfectly into this aesthetic. Teleseen is the main project of nomadic DJ, producer and multi- instrumentalist Gabriel Cyr and draws influence from deep house, afro house, samba, batucada as well as the experimentalism and sound system cultures of his home town NYC. His sound leans heavily on polyrhythmic programming and he’s nothing short of a synth wizard. His ‘Exposures EP’ features 3 originals, and a remix by Berlin based Italian house guru Black Loops.

Platzdasch & Dix hit the ground running with a beautiful four-tracker. 'En Plein Air' combines heavy drums, open hats and gorgeous piano riffs resulting in a simple, yet beautiful cut. 'November' builds up elegantly with a seamless layering of elements. Beautiful piano chords, heavy pads and straight drums are all it takes. On the flip side, 'En Plein Air' receives a couple of reworks. Melchior Sultana goes all out with a driving rhythm section and a bassline that complements the original keys. Henrik Villard returns to Feedasoul on remix duties. Straight off the bat, Henrik's signature groove cuts through the track with deeper drums, uplifting chords and a movement-inducing rhythm.
