Some DJs want to challenge and confound you. Heidy P just wants you to have fun. Currently splitting her time between her native Montreal and New York, the rainbow-haired, riotously dressed DJ has a personality that’s just as vibrant, on and off the decks. She plays music that sparks joy  — mostly uplifting house and disco spanning the ‘80s til now, with an emphasis on the classic Chicago, Detroit and New York house music that is her biggest inspiration.

Heidy’s infectious sets have won her primetime sets at Good Room, Le Bain, Sunday Sunday, Nowadays, House of Yes, Piknic Electronik, Movement Festival and Lisbon’s Lux Fragil, and supporting slots for the likes of The Blessed Madonna, Jellybean Benitez, Bob Sinclar, Mystery Affair and Andrew VanWyngarden. Her productions are as feel-good as her DJing, from her romantic re-edits of ‘90s classics like Sophie B.Hawkins’ “Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover” to her recent “Elevate” EP released on Rocksteady Disco, a glorious summery house jam supported by Laurent Garnier and Move D and featuring remixes by the Carry Nation and Pontchartrain. 

Heidy’s musical journey kicked off in her early 20s in Montreal, where she hosted a weekly radio show and learned to DJ on the job at various residencies around the city. Indie music was her first passion, but the electroclash movement of the mid ‘00s led by artists such as Miss Kittin and DJ Hell was the portal through which she had her mind blown by club music. She played in bars around Berlin during a short stint living in the city, then headed back to North America and went to Detroit’s Movement Festival for the first time, where she saw legendary DJ Claude Young mixing records with his elbows and fell hopelessly in love with classic house music. 

Other overseas stints followed in Paris and in Lisbon, where Heidy became a regular at the city’s most famous club, Lux Fragil, and would spend her weekends DJing, dancing, and absorbing lessons in how to make a crowd move. Playing at all manner of bars and clubs around the world on a variety of equipment has taught Heidy how to adapt to the most challenging of situations. When thrown a curveball, she’s likely to knock it out of the park. 

In the past few years she’s been back in North America, Heidy’s seen some of her wildest dreams materialise, including performing at Detroit’s hallowed Movement Festival in the VIP area, playing the main room at one of Mexico City’s best clubs, Sunday Sunday, and regularly DJing at fabled New York venue Le Bain, against the twinkling backdrop of the Manhattan skyline. 

Recently, she played one of her favourite sets ever – a back to back with Andrew VanWyngarden of MGMT. Sharing the decks with one of her heroes as an indie-loving twenty-something was a pinch-me full circle moment for Heidy, but the opportunity came as no surprise to those who know what she’s capable of. Her rapturous selections, charisma and joie de vivre are a genuine gift to dancers serious about having a good time, and her unabashed commitment to the pursuit of pleasure inspires everyone in the club to do the same. Like a sprinkling of technicolour fairy dust beamed through the speakers, Heidy’s  magical energy is something you’ll want to experience again and again.
