Programming Music

All nebulae are staggeringly beautiful and deserved of song.  One of the ongoing missions of Chromosphere is to accomplish this endeavor.  Of course this can't be done in one lifetime, but that barrier offers no real incentive to not try.
  Personnel for this voyage, and with great thanks from mission control are Roland Last on guitars and Scott McGregor Moore on dream synth.  Mission specialist Heiki Sillaste rounds out this crew expertly with his indispensable mastering and graphic layout.

The desire to escape the strict confines of the concrete city during the warm months, is central to maintaining a clear real/hyper real divide. Recorded in isolation over a two day period in The Great Canadian North. No telephone and no outside connections, clear of the Mobile Mass. Recorded on the sauna porch. Not clear of electronic music making devices though. Ha!

Toronto's paper+sound label has been operating since 2009, releasing a wide range of electronic and electronic based music in it's year existence. This is the 50th release for the label, having put music out on cassette, vinyl albums, vinyl 7" and compact discs, as well as digital only downloads.

The Quiet Drones compilation series has been a long favourite of the label, showcasing mostly exclusive and unreleased ambient drone music largely from the Toronto and surrounding region. Past contributors have included paper+sound affiliated artists such as HEIKI, CHROMOSPHERE, dreamSTATE, naw, PROCESSOR, ATONEMENT and DE HAGA. With selected deep drones from KALTE, NORTHUMBRIA, DISPLACER, URM, SEVA, MICHAEL HOLCER, JAKOB THIESEN, CELL MEMORY, CINEMASCOPE and more.

Quiet Drones 8 opens with Toronto’s brilliant Dirty Inputs. Huge installations and video wonders are the name of the game in his hugely popular live extravaganzas. This epic introduction recalls Germanic textures of the 70s kind. The latest Dirty Inputs album ‘The Runcible’ is out now on tape from paper+sound. Saskatchewan native Pulsewidth contributes a complex, powerful and relentless modular drone. Building Castles Out of Matchsticks (a.k.a. Anne Sulikowski) has created a modulated system piece, topped with stretched granular radio swirls. Her latest album is available on CD from paper+sound.

J.M. Ladd doesn't typically drone, but here, he certainly goes deep. Bowed music to bow down to. Improvised sound by mostly visual artist Inchoate (Brett Despotovich) slowly evolves from a flurry of abstract noises to a delicate machine melody. Pastoral, melodic beauty flows from No Colour Blue, a tape-based ambient electronic collaboration between Jess Forrest of Castle If and M. Joakim of Processor. Deep as the Sea by musical dreamscaper Andrea Smits (a.k.a The Frequency Project) is a slowly evolving piece, revealing ever-shifting melodic textures and phrases.

Secret Cinema

Heiki (Hey-Key) is a veteran of the Toronto electronic music scene. Since 1987, Heiki Sillaste has released an impressive catalogue of well over 55 synthesizer-based records and made over 150 compilation appearances.

Heiki began his musical career fronting the internationally acclaimed industrial-tekno group DIGITAL POODLE in the late 80’s and early 90’s while running the now famous Shadow Canada label.

In 1995, he went on to co-found nice+smooth ultramedia, an independent electronic music label that has produced great records by fellow musicians such as Roy Davis Jr., Jordan Fields, Teknostep, as well as Heiki’s own groups KINDER ATOM, LAZER CAPS, LES FONTAINES and HOZERZ.

Heiki’s collaborative and remix work has been wide reaching, including work with the likes of dreamSTATE, Teknostep, Visionary, seminal ambient composers Rapoon and Zoviet France, Dead Voices on Air, as well reggae superstars Michael Rose and Musical Sniper.

Heiki currently works as a graphic designer and he owns and operates the Toronto based paper+sound record label.
