Bio:

Almost Famous is a Berlin based DJ. Growing up with 90s hip hop, he gradually found his way to house and disco music through funk and soul. While he always had a passion for sharing music and collecting records, he started DJing only a few years back. What started as a gig for fun at a friend’s birthday party slowly but surely developed into a real passion for mixing music on a regular basis. Together with a couple of friends, Almost Famous organizes and hosts ‘Not In My House’ and ‘Disko, No Disko’, both recurring club nights at Humboldthain Club in Berlin. Though bringing joy to people on the dance floors of Berlin is what initially drove his love for mixing music, he adapted to the current circumstances by starting to contribute to more and more guest mixes for house and disco lovers to enjoy, wherever they are.

After representing The Remedy Project during their debut party at Amsterdam Dance Event, the genre-bending Makèz release their debut track on tastemaker Melvo Baptiste’s imprint. The Dutch duo, who are known for incorporating soul, jazz, and disco influences into their eclectic house music, feature vocalist dreamcastmoe on ‘Phases’. Currently one of the American dance scene’s brightest voices, the DC native’s unique flow is complimented by Makèz’s production and use of retro-synth pads, culminating in an understated and laid-back track that you don’t want to miss.

Makèz is no stranger to challenging the status quo of what house music can be. The duo is known for contemporarily remixing the ingredients of classic house into future proof compositions. In an old house flanking one of the canals of Amsterdam is a cozy home studio, with enough floor space for a couple of chairs and a side table. Stretched around the walls are computers, cables, synths, drum machines and vinyl records. It’s in this attic that Makèz, the duo of Kees van ’t Klooster and Jan-Willem Mulder, convene to explore the world of electronic music. The form of art that ties them to one another, as well as the world around them. The two met in high-school and instinctively connected. They spoke the same languages of classic disco records, jazz- and hip hop albums and soulful house singles. So, they found themselves crate-digging and swapping 12-inches constantly. It was only a matter of time before they wound up jamming together. It was then, that they learned their modes of self-expression are preternaturally harmonious. Kees finds his voice in sound design and has a keen feel for programming and arranging. Jan-Willem on the other hand, expresses himself through keyboard melodies, warm chords and wobbly basslines. They started recording their ideas on tape, and became music technology graduates. While exploring the versatility of the electronic music scene, Makèz demos drew the attention of hometown heroes Dam Swindle and landed on their label Heist in 2019. Their first EP ‘Different Planets’ gained major support from artists like Seth Troxler, Danny Krivit and Chez Damier. Not much later, a pair of club orientated EP’s on NYC’s Let’s Play House Records appeared. The blueprint of a Makèz piece is distinct and obvious, even if the words for it are elusive and shifting. Everything they produce is deeply soulful, informed by R&B, future jazz and deep house. The duo took time to further innovate their sound with insights they gained from their DJ gigs. Furthermore, their energetic and interactive style of playing records, plus their complementary studio flow, organically led to their first live-set. Their debut album, a Heist production, is called ‘City of All’. Join the two for a vibrant voyage, fusing the sounds of places that shaped their musical vision. His perfect blend of classic and contemporary sounds in his DJ sets and productions have made him one of our favourite artists over the years. Pooley’s house tracks invariably endorse a deep, rhythmic sound while exuding warmth and authenticity. His career has spanned a good couple of decades now and he's released some stellar records on his own Pooled Music but also with Innervisions, Ovum and Tsuba to name just a handful. His latest 'Good Things' EP on Cassy’s Kwench records is yet another jam from his extensive discography.

Casually Hanging Out Vol. 4

Heist Recordings was founded by Dam Swindle as a means to gain full control over their own releases, and to create a stage for likeminded musicians to showcase their music. From the first release on, Dam Swindle’s “Break up to make up” EP in summer 2013, Heist has been a go to label for proper underground house and electronic music. Now, nearly 40 releases and 5 compilations in, Heist has brought forward artists like Frits Wentink, Nebraska, Adesse Versions, Fouk, Kassian, Nachtbraker and Alma Negra and continues to search for new talent, with Lars & Maarten fully focused on the A&R side of the label. 

Up till 2016, remixes on the label have been solely done by other original Heist artists on the yearly “Round up EP”, where the remixer and remixee get connected by the luck of the draw and a limited edition double pack is put out. After that, Maarten and Lars decided it was time to add remixers to the EP’s as well, which saw interesting collaboration, expanded the label family with names like Matthew Herbert, Tom Noble, Pépé Bradock, Ge-ology and Byron the Aquarius. 

2023 we're celebrating 10 years of Heist Recordings. This year will show a whole batch of new artists like Byron the Aquarius, Amy Dabbs and Cinthie and Dam Swindle themselves.
