Crystalizing this ethos into his productions, Joe has enjoyed a string of well received releases on a myriad of diverse record labels. It's an intoxicating cocktail that has seen him play around the world and back again, from smoke filled basements to festival stages and all points between. 

Joe strives to leave no stone unturned in his search for the perfect beat through his Shades Of Sound record label and radio shows.

Brennan is a good pal, a fellow BMX enthusiast, and a terrific DJ & Producer. He was a natural for a first guest. In true fraternal Irish style Brennan broke my balls, but also graciously
helped with some of the arduous setup issues for this undertaking. He left with my studio keys (!), but also gave me the complete episodes of “Trailer Park Boys”, one of his native land’s
greatest cultural contributions. Special thanks to Tariq Abdus-Sabur and Sean Brennan for all their help on this, and for putting up with me & BG. Brennan Green runs the Chinatown label, DJ’s worldwide, and has produced numerous original tracks and remixes. His most recent project is the Kid Creole LP “I Wake Up Screaming” on Strut

There can't be many acts with as wide an appeal as Sheffield producer and artist Yarni. The late, great Andrew Weatherall was fond of dropping his tunes, Gilles Peterson and Luke Una are fans, and radio types Craig Charles and Huey Morgan are often known to slide one into their 6Music schedules.

He's just announced what he's calling his most ambitious project to date, "Anemoia," an album exploring the Greek concept of nostalgia for a time never known, collaborating with ten musicians and vocalists across ten tracks that weave disco, soul, jazz-funk, hip-hop and trip-hop into a thoroughly modern tapestry. "This isn't about recreating the past, but channeling its spirit into something new," he says.

It's set for an October release on Stanhope Records, with a string of teaser singles to keep an eye out for in the meantime. But us being the impatient types that we are, we persuaded him to take to the decks for a mix session right here, right now...

Some kind of Paradise

West African in heritage, Naarm (Melbourne)-based Zjoso has quickly become an essential thread weaving through the city’s musical tapestry.

He is the founder of Tribqu, a platform celebrating underground music and culture. At the helm, he has successfully carved out a distinct role as a DJ, radio host, and curator. His monthly radio program on Skylab has become a cult favorite, while his dance events cultivate a space where music is not driven by a specific genre, but rather by a feeling and an exploration of sound and movement. Tribqu has energized a community movement of like-minded music lovers.

An accomplished and versatile DJ, Zjoso explores his love for soulful music across a broad spectrum. In a relatively short time, he has asserted himself as a prominent figure on Naarm’s clubbing circuit, with a discerning taste that touches on sounds like Street Soul, Dub Reggae, 90s House, Broken Beat and Detroit Techno. 

He navigates both dance floors and radio frequencies with perceptive ability and a sharp skill set. The recherché selector’s recognition is evident through invitations to share the stage with the likes of Ron Trent, Glenn Underground, Marcellus Pittman, Errol (Touching Bass), Hagan, Shy One, Bradley Zero (Rhythm Section), Ruby Savage, Steve Spacek, and Dreamcastmoe.

Having toured across Europe, South East Asia and New Zealand, Zjoso has played at parties and venues such as Rhythm Section, Secret Sundaze, Potato Head (Bali), Beam Cube and Friendly Potential. He has also played Australian and UK festivals such as Golden Plains Sun Cycle, Freedom Time, Hopkins Creek, Echo Beach, Strawberry Fields, Mode, Pitch Music and Arts Festival.

A love for dancing, a passion for discovering and sharing music, and an inherent motivation to bring people together through these forms serve as the foundation for Zjoso’s creative focus. He is a vibrant voice helping to define the shape of Australian dance culture.

Coloring Lessons Mix Series 074: ZJOSO

"Night Drive" with its robotic beat, syncopated bass and repetitive pop vocals drenched in reverb is reminiscent of these treasured 12” extended mixes found on the b-sides of your favourite techno pop band of the 80’s. You know the ones carved by Ship Pettibone and the likes and where you didn’t need to suffer the emo chorus of the original.

Club Bizarre are closing the EP with their own hypnotic take on this track. All bouncing bass and trippy synth sequences, their remix feels more techno but somehow manage to bring out the cinematic and romantic sides of the original.

John Talabot and Axel Boman teamed up in 2017 for their R&S debut ’The Night Land’ where they got to flex their creative muscles over eight tracks of rich synth jams.  

The two electronic artists have been independently successful in their respective careers, but as Pitchfork expressed in their glowing review “Their collective output doesn’t sound much like either’s work; it doesn’t even necessarily reflect the thin, convex sliver where their interests overlap. Instead, they’ve hit upon something new.”

This new sound also proved to be a hit with the likes of Mojo, Phonica, XLR8R, Self Titled and DJ Mag all including it their annual best of lists.

The artists have now handpicked four artists to create their own vision of the Talaboman sound.  
Superpitcher, Samo DJ, Luke Slater under his L.B. Dub Corp alias and Powder have all seriously delivered the goods.

When Hell Yeah boss Marco dropped Fabrizio Mammarella’s Ambient Remix of Gallo’s ‘Faron’ at sunset at Hostal la Torre in Ibiza last year, people started queuing up for IDs. Well now that remix is at the heart of an EP filled with new tunes by Gallo.

Gallo is a Berlin based Italian who is a key part of the nu-Balearic movement. He makes, plays and loves uplifting music that is loveably epic and emotional. He’s recently remixed Chris Coco, is part of the Balearic Gabba Sound System, resident at horizontal party Buena onda in Berlin and Ibiza and co-hosts his own radio show, My Way. He also has a new 12" EP on Slow Motion (Orange Stripe) coming soon, so is very much on the rise. 

In original form, ‘Remember to Forget’ is a perfectly laid back and languid groove peppered with gentle toms, bass twangs and romantic chords. Distant keys sound like sun beating down on the water and the whole thing blisses you out in no time. 

First to remix are UK trio Clandestino. They flip it into something more upbeat and tropical, with rolling bass and brilliant drum work. Whispered vocals melt into the mix and soothing xylophone patterns finish it in heart swelling style. 

Fabrizio Mammarella’s Ambient Mix is a heavenly rework with expansive chords floating past like cotton wool clouds in the sky. Celestial keys help the whole thing glow with a sense of new age dreaminess and it’s easy to see why this one makes such an impact at open air Balearic dances. 

Gallo then offers Ebrezza, a spacious and loose soup of percussion, thoughtful keys and distant kicks that are barely there. It’s archetypal balearic ambient music that will slow down even the busiest minds. 

Last of all, 1986 is another super slow motion bit of bliss with sunset synths swirling about like a zephyr. As it plays out you can almost feel the sand between your toes and the rays of the fading sun on your face. Perfect stuff.

Having previously released on a wealth of labels including Marco Dionigi's Quantistic division and mighty Dutch imprint Bordello a Parigi (the latter in cahoots with legendary producer Alexander Robotnick), it would be fair to say that Tulioxi is one of the rising stars of contemporary cosmic disco. Further evidence to back up this theory can be found on the Italian producer's latest EP, in the rubbery bass, wild electronics and mind-altering effects of Baldelli-esque opener "The Outside" especially.

Nein Records is no stranger to the 44100, with a number of premieres and a number of guest mixes who have been on
or have links with Nein. Tronik Youth's 'techno but not techno' imprint has called in the services of new talent from Bruges
Pierre Vue, AKA Connor and gone one stage further by calling in Mexico based Armando Ramirez also known as Horreur to reconfigure.
The result is an epic dancefloor destroyer which is dark as hell and full of fire, filth and fury. A low end which would rattle windows and an unrelenting rolling bass which typifies the sound of Nein. Stratos is the sound of two young producers literally reaching for the sky. Keep a close eye on both of these producers. 
If their recent output is anything to go by, the net 12 months will see them both go stratospheric.
