Late Night Tales

Chris Decato remembers 1988 in Portsmouth by the private hours he spent over a Tascam 234 stacking layers of guitar and pulsing synth on tape. The recordings from these sessions, Transmissions, are now available to the public via Astro Nautico on cassette and digital formats for the first time.

Mazing through clouds of arpeggiated guitar (“Spectral Interference”) and foggy Roland D-50 pads, Transmissions soothes and coaxes with youthful romanticism (“A Promise”) and somber mystery (“The Call”). Decato wrote the music as a 17-year-old living with his brother in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Decato says his tape experiments sounded like “fairy princess music” in comparison with the hard rock popular in the region at the time, so he mostly kept it to himself.

“This was stuff that I never ever thought anyone would want to listen to,” Decato said. “It was this hidden side of myself that no one knew about.”

For years, the only people who had heard Transmissions were a handful of family members, friends, and a small group of commercial video producers to whom Decato had sent his demos. Native to London, producer and label head Zeb Samuels has collaborated with the expressive keyboardist Kiko Continentino to create his latest single ‘About That Time’, which will be released on the 04th of November via Deep Heads. The single follows Zeb’s recently released compilation LP Cosmic Vibrations Vol.3.

The producer has earned nearly 2 million streams on Spotify alone and received support from numerous industry publications, including Stereofox, CLASH Magazine, Magnetic Magazine, XLR8R, Electronic Groove, and Decoded Magazine among others. His music has also been aired by BBC Radio 6 Music’s Gilles Peterson, Don Letts, Nemone, 5FM’s Kid Fonque, and Soulection Radio’s Joe Kay.

The collaboration is flavoured with hints of Lofi Hip-hop, Jazz, and Electronic to create something truly unique. Self-confessed music fanatic Zeb Samuels grew up in London where he discovered a world of music that gifted him with his appreciation for a variety of genres.

The self-taught pianist developed further, adding songwriter, producer, and vocalist to his list of offerings. As the label manager for Deep Heads, he has released works from Ash Walker, Synkro, Djrum, Escapism Refuge, Joe Armon-Jones, Mcknasty, Congi, Geode, Versa and Rowl. He finds much of his inspiration in Boards of Canada, Pink Floyd, Robert Glasper and LTJ Bukem.

Born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Kiko Continentino is a pianist and composer who began to learn his craft at age 15, when he began performing at the local Pianíssimo Studio Bar, a jazz and bossa nova space that marked an era in the city. Later, he became the keyboardist of the legendary trio Azymuth, where he continues to perform. Over the years, he has played alongside the five-time Grammy Award-winning
instrumentalist Milton Nascimento.

‘About That Time’ was produced by Zeb Samuels and co-written by Kiko Continentino who worked his magic on the Rhodes piano, improvising the lead melody on the first take. The track is a dreamy scatter of sounds and melodies, pulsing into the cosmos. It will have you drifting into its orbit, immersed in its frequencies, set to full beam.

Zeb Samuels tells us how the collaboration came to be: “The track actually started off as a vocal production I had been working on for some time. Then Kiko contacted me and told me he’d be in London for the Azimuth tour, so we arranged a recording session at my home studio. Originally, it was meant to be just a short improvisation I wanted to capture at the end of the record, but I recorded him for the duration of the production. I was so blown away by his recording takes that I just knew in my heart that Kiko’s stem needed to be the lead of the recording.”

New Zealand disco-boogie outfit Flamingo Pier plant some Brooklyn roots with their fresh new ‘Beneath the Neon EP’ on Razor-N-Tape. Known for parties in East London and their massive hometown festival, as well as previous releases on Soundway, the Kiwi collective deliver a trio of new songs that solidify and expand their signature danceable blue-eyed indie-soul sound.

Lead off single How 2 Feel shows a clubbier side of the band, with a pulsating house rhythm track and layers of angular synth stabs, vibey horn lines, and vocal chants. Beneath the Neon and Remedy are more familiar Flamingo Pier territory, upbeat indie disco anthems that boast incendiary vocal hooks, funky guitar work, and crisp production by Luke Walker.

Hell Yeah is back to extract another sublime single from Michele Mininni's Pop Archetypes album, with 'Vertigo' up next alongside a remix from label favourite and downtempo king Calm.

Italian leftfield wizard Mininni has released on the likes of R&S, Optimo Trax and Internasjonal, but on his debut album, he mixed up a new palette of broken beats, worldly rhythms, jazz, and live drums into a diverse and multicultural trip.

At the heart of it is the gorgeous 'Vertigo', a heavenly interlude of shimmering wordless vocals, yearning melodies and widescreen design with gentle synth notes bringing the movement. Calm is a label favourite who has remixed and released albums and EPs here many times before. He elevates the track by layering in a languid dub rhythm and synths that swirl around the groove while the choral vocals bring blissful feels.

Sometimes in life you find yourselves at a point where you need to walk away and leave something behind if you ever want to go back to it. Other paths must be walked, other experiences learnt from to give you a fresh view of where you’ve come from. In that sense going back to the roots, rediscovering their past with fresh eyes, is the concept behind Richard Dorfmeister & Rupert Huber’s new Tosca album, ‘Going Going Going’.

For over two decades and several albums Tosca has served as a vehicle for Richard and Rupert to express their personal moods and impressions, each release holding up a mirror to their inner lives. Now though after ten albums the journey has come full circle and once again they’ve returned to the kind of instrumental tracks, full of deep beats and dubbed out textures that made Tosca’s name.

“It just feels good to come back to our original sound,“ says Rupert Huber. “After experimenting with song structures and vocal collaborations on the last album (2014’s “Outta Here”), we were looking at how we could make a logical progression and we realized that our real strength lay in TOSCA’s roots, we just has to update that sound into something that made sense in 2017.”

The result is ‘Going Going Going’, an album that Tosca fans will immediately recognize and yet one that doesn’t just trade on former glories. Hitting the ground running opening track ‘Import Export’ sounds like a Lee Scratch Perry version of a Ennio Morricone soundtrack, a motif reoccurs throughout the album, most notably on ‘Dr Dings’, their reinterpretation of America’s classic ‘Horse With No Name’.

Like the best of Tosca’s output though ‘Going Going Going’ denies easy catergorsation taking in everything from the uneasy listening of ‘Hausner’ to excursions into House (‘Wotan’), Ambient Electronica (‘Olympia), Funk (‘Loveboat’) and beyond. Still despite an almost overabundance of ideas, in the more than capable hands of these two pioneers the result is a complex yet coherent and confident album that stands shoulder to shoulder with the best of their storied back catalogue.

‘Da Starga Tora’ kicks off the album with calming strings in the distance balanced with pulsating notes and undulating tranquillity before ‘Borealis’ progresses with smooth bass grooves, chugging drums and enrapturing guitar strings keeping the alleviating blissfulness. ‘Alina’ deploys emotively leads throughout fused with enthralling melodies and heavenly progression while weaving synth waves, stabbing melodies and breezy atmospheres take the focus in ‘Exile’.

‘Nussing’ maintains the angelic ambience harmonising euphoric vocals, fluid keys and psychedelic infused aesthetics throughout. ‘Baboobap’ then delivers spaced-out modulations, piercing grooves and meditative elements keeping the mood tranquil yet effervescent until giving space to ‘Prelude’ that offers soothing chords and revolving swells. ‘All is changing’ then delightfully rounds off the pack with shoegaze influenced atmospheres, thought-provoking nostalgia and beautiful vocals to elevate the senses.

Coming straight from the streets of Brooklyn / New York City is Rao, an electronic artist and producer on the rise but defo not a fresh face in the music industry at all. Formerly prone to heavy guitar based music as a member of several Metal band outfits and touring all across the United States Rao has taken a full on turn and is now ready to transform regular dancefloors into proper melodic hugpits of joy with his „Sun Gate EP".

The opening title cut „Sun Gate" sees Rao in full effect, starting out with a stretched, uplifting build up sequence and ever present, moving mid range synths in continuous interplay with tender melodic pads and patches, bringing forth a thought out balance of tension and relief, accompanied by a certain mystique whilst interestingly avoiding any potential climax before giving way to the next tune in the mix.

With „Sprinkles" Rao caters more of a deep melodic feel on a distinct TechHouse foundation, introducing layers upon layers of soft, blurry and dubbed out pads for a start before a stripped down main signal, all embracing organic groove and tender, yet slight aggressive and off-kilter midrange modulations add a slightly technoid counterpart element to the tunes all embracing friendliness.

Finally „Fallen Arches" explores outworldly terrain unfolding atop Rao's trademark sculpted TechHouse drums. Whipping percussive elements in the background, gated snares and hi-hats as well as a driving, synth bass are the basic structural elements on which ever moving strings and pads unfold, move and intertwine, bringing on an iridescent memory of beautiful sunrises, early morning sunrise Trance as well as everlasting love and world peace.

Hell Yeah Recordings, a descendent of leading Italian dance label Mantra Vibes is an Italian-based electronic music label active since 2006. Releasing from Ferrara, Bologna, and Amsterdam and led by Marco Gallerani “peeDoo” (A&R), the label bases its philosophy on a diversity of artists and recording experiences tied together by a common vision of what defines quality progressive recording.

Hell Yeah aims to build upon its current reputation as a leading Italian Electronic Music play, overseeing the release of a series of progressive productions that straddle genres, defy conventions and blur barriers between listening and dance music. Stemming from Hell Yeah’s initial graphic identity formed by Neverending’s Rocco “the Boghe” Pezzella, new mind-bending web and label artworks from Italian artist Andrea Amaducci and the Berlin-based Ice Cream For Free collective promises complete visual as well as aural stimulation.
