Underground System - Bella Ciao (Leo Mas & Fabrice Remixes)

Hell Yeah, this time in collaboration with DJ Ralf's Laterra Recordings, is a label you can always rely on to come up with some interesting musical projects, and that is exactly the case here: the Italian outlet’s next releases are four "balearic" tinged remixes of a popular Italian chant, Bella Ciao, by Brooklyn troupe Underground System released on two separate 12"s,  remixes come from Leo Mas & Fabrice and Gigi Masin, and stunning artwork by Andrea Amducci inspired by Guttuso’s "Funerale di Togliatti.”

This new project came about after Leo Mas played the afro-beat original cover on his Boiler Room set in Ibiza and made it a bonafide balearic nu-classic, legend Alfredo loved it so much he requested a copy, which lead the label to get official rights for its release.

Originally, Bella Ciao is actually a partisan Italian song created during the civil war that is a hymn of freedom and resistance. Here it is flipped into two tantalisingly feel good disco anthems by Leo Mas & Fabrice, one with vocals and one all dubbed out.

Leo Mas is a true legend, who was there at the start of the Ibiza revolution in the 80s. He played at Amnesia with Alfredo and since has pioneered a house and balearic sound on many different labels. Fabrice is another Italian with long standing disco roots who, along with Leo and Andrea Gemolotto, was part of *La Magica Triade *and now releases/remixes on labels like Is It Balearic?, Golf Channel, Music For Dreams

The vocal version is full of gentle tumbling toms, cute guitar riffs and rolling bass. The exquisite vocal chants up top add plenty of joyous vibes to the already summery beats and then it just rolls and rolls, making you shake your behind and swing your hips as it goes.

Melbourne resident Sui Zhen’s ‘Female Basic’ showcases her own version of Japanese post-punk through a dreamy baleric-bossanova filter.

Having graduated from the Redbull Music Academy in London alongside the likes of Daisuke Tanabe & Andras Fox, Female Basic sees Sui Zhen move away from her previous beautiful bedroom-pop on to something more minimal and mysterious.  Influenced as much by long sunny days spent in Osaka as nights in Shinjuku record stores hunting for Mariah & Dip in the Pool vinyl, Sui Zhen gives us the soundtrack for a slow-motion, late night disco found somewhere between Australia & Japan.

Female Basic is available from May 1st through Teto Records on limited edition cassette and digital.  5 tracks & 25 minutes of minimal pop perfection.  All cassettes come with download code with high quality digital versions of all included songs.

Over the past 6 years WOLF Music have earned their stripes as stalwart purveyors of refined House and Disco. Now, in the follow up to Medlar and Greymatter’s debut LPs and EPs from the likes of Ishmael, Ossie and Casino Times they ready their 3rd LP from Dutchman Frits Wentink.

Now residing in Amsterdam, Frits has a glowing back catalogue of soulful, Lo Fi club material that’s touched Heist Recordings as well as WOLF in the form of his ‘Mouse’ and ‘Goose’ EPs. With an experimental approach to hardware and instrumentation, his work blooms naturally through jams and improv and in this - his debut LP: ‘Rarely Pure, Never Simple’ we see a development in this experimentation to enlivening effect.

Working with a meld of grubby samples, chunky percussion and the frequent vocal accompaniment of Utrecht based Loes Jongerling, Rarely Pure Never Simple is a journey through Frits’ influences forged into a cohesive pack of grooves and interludes tinged with a certain charming nostalgia.
